New Ikelite Bulkhead

  1. Nice

  2. I really hope that this is a part you can just buy and add to an existing housing. I am really glad that they did this. No matter how careful I am, the cord takes a beating sticking out the back.

  3. It does look like a nice solution. Here is the picture from Ikelite's site:

  4. It looks like this will solve the problem of the bulkhead design destroying your sync cord - thank Ike. But aren't there some other issues that folks have mentioned?

    Cheers

It's looks like 'L' connector between the sync cord and the housing bulkhead.

Yeah, as has been said ~1E6 times, it sure would be nice if the camera mounted to the body rather than back of the housing (avoiding all this sync cord awkwardness and allowing CF *and* battery access without unmounting the camera (for me, CF is more important than battery -- D70 batteries last a loooong time). Maybe someday...each generation of these housings is a little better, and Ike does listen.

Hopefully Ike will chime in and let us know if this part can be ordered/fitted to existing housings easily.

    All the best,

    Chris

  7. Will also help with cord tangled in regulator syndrome.

I suspect that Ike will say that older housings can be upgraded (for a price) but it is something that is best done at the factory.

On the ITTL description page on Ikelite website.

Photograph shows sync cord attached to the new right-angle bulkhead on these housings
  9. Nice new feature!! ;):(

Just wonder if this new bulhead will also be installed to new batch of some existing housing model??? I'm looking for a housing for my 20D, so hope that ikelite will come up with a new 20D housing that has this angled bulkhead installed. :P

  10. This is a major step forward for Ikelite. This was one of the reasons I didn't buy an Ikelite housing.

If Ike can now develop a magnifying viewfinder at a reasonable price a la Subal/Seacam then his housings are going to become incredibly compelling when coupled with digital TTL.

Aquatica, Sea & Sea and other mid-priced alternatives will be put under pressure to up their feature count despite their strong build quality.

  11. The ikelite site mentions no new orders before half july. Does anybody know when they expect to deliver the orders placed around 3 weeks ago?!?

    (Like many others I can' t wait !!!) :P

    Mike.

  12. Well, it was worth waiting for this model :-) Grrr..... can't wait to get mine.

  13. William, Seems you are correct and it’s a new bulkhead.

Hope Ikelite will offer this upgrade in reasonable price as they done before with upgrades that fixed some issues.

  14. Hey Ike,

    This looks sweet

Will this be available for the 20D housing?

Is this user serviceable or does it need a trip back to the factory?

    When will it be available?

    How much?

    Thanks!

  15. Will take time for us to ascertain how the bulkhead installs in each model housing, and to work it throughout the line. May not be easy for user to install with machining and soldering requirments. We need a few weeks to study the possibilities............

  16. Looks like a much better solution! Though I suspect you'd still may have some regulators (like Poseidon) colliding, this way I think you have eliminated the risk of either reg or mask getting caught, and it will now be much safer to hand the kit to the boat crew without risk of them ruining the cable when they put it somewhere. well done!

Now all you have to do is to dream up a solution for us who bought the old housing for 20D last month or so...

Say you made that L shaped connection plug into the old bulkhead. I am sure there are some technical issues, but engineers love a challenge right?

  17. Yes Ike,

I would love to have this on my 6130.61 housing. It wil save on the wear and tear of the flash cable.

    Waiting with cash in hand.

  18. :) And I'll take a retrofit for my D100! Although I just received my D100 housing a month ago, I'm very hot for this!

Please Ike, send out a board-wide notification for these upgrades.

    Thanks and Dive cheerfully!

    Ron

  19. If you have ANY Ikelite dSLR housing and want to "protect" your flash cable from being crunched by surly dive guides, etc. simply position your left hand strobe in an upside down "V" configuration with the strobe head body slightly behind the housing at the same level of the housing tray.

Keeps it from rocking backward and I have had NO cord failures for 2+ years and 100's of dives using this method :)

    Hope this helps!
