  3. I'll try to elaborate a bit. The parameters that adjust a photographic (and video) image are aperture, shutter speed and ISO. The Gopro, like all action cameras has a fixed aperture. The one on the Gopro is F2.8. If we also lock the shutter (hoping to use the 180° rule), to expose the image correctly, the camera will only be able to vary the ISO which is the least flexible parameter. In full light conditions the images would be totally overexposed (F2.8 1/50 ISO 100). In low light, at ISO 800 the games are over already. But then why did they put this option in the menus? Marketing certainly and then an option that can be useful in special situations with controlled and constant light. At that point you can intervene with ND filters. Or to 100% eliminate flickering from artificial light.

  6. Yes, long story short, it's not a matter of fisheye or rectilinear lens but just a matter of actual FOV. The most critical camera movements are tilt and pan. Ciao

  10. Good question. I stick (almost) to rectilinear. In your shots the fisheye works because as Chris wrote, with the crop you are cutting most of the fisheye effect. Moreover the motion is parallel to the reef (trucking shot) and there are no subjects crossing the frame. The shape of the reef confuses or hides the horizon distortion. In documentaries it is used in just such cases: a bird's eye view of a reef where the particular perspective given by the fisheye communicates to the viewer the vastness and infinity with a frontal movement (dolly shot) as in your second case. The problems come when you have subjects crossing the frame or staying on the edges. The distortion introduced by the fisheye is not to say annoying but alienating. Imagine doing a rotation on yourself (panning shot) to follow a fish while keeping the bottom reef framed. The movement would look unnatural. In these cases it is more a matter of FOV and even extreme rectilinear lenses suffer from the same flaw. However, I have used the fisheye several times and don't mind it, knowing its characteristics you can exploit it. I still use the WWL-1B which has a slight distortion typical of fisheye. Often, on panning shots, I zoom in slightly to avoid the distortion. Once I forgot the dome for 7-14 at home and saved myself with an 8mm fisheye. Too bad they were all wreck dives. I won't tell you how the gun barrels came out! 😀 But it was that or nothing...
  11. That type of booklet closure is subject to those problems. When you close the housing pay attention to the cleanliness of the o-ring and close very precisely checking that the o-ring is not pinched. Especially in the part near the hinge. When it is closed, spend a second of time checking that the o-ring is positioned correctly.

  16. I think the suggestions given from the op are a good start. Regarding WB I'd go for "native" as @bghazzal suggested. Auto wb on Gopro is really unpredictable. Of course you are forced to do some color correction during edit but for uw work it's a must. You are in a PAL country so 50p is mandatory. With the AOI lens you don't have corners problem so wide FOV all the life. If you are filming in the Med you need a couple of good lights. Give a look at the YouTube channel of our member @jpiovano He has several good examples of Gopro in the Med and IIRC he is using an AOI lens. Maybe he can share his settings. Last but not the least: Gopros are tiny weightless cameras so a perfect trim is paramount and it's difficult to achieve. Often I see Gopro kit unmanageable underwater. Weight all unbalanced to the lights. With such a setup it's impossible to get steady shots.

  20. Backscatter version works perfectly in 16:9 or 9:16. The op was experiencing vignetting using the full sensor readout 8:7. In this mode both Backscatter and AOI vignettes The Backscatter version gives you the option to use their filters.
