Problems Blufin with Fathom for Xr520

  1. I have checked and I was wrong, and my lens does not have Fathom on it anywhere. (Amazing what the mind assumes is there when other larger assumptions are made!)

It only has UOM, so they are not guilty of deliberate fraud. As Paul from Fathom was reacting to an incorrect statement from me, I am removing his reaction to that statement above, as I don't thing it's fair to keep it there.

I also did not get permission from Paul to put these up on the website, but wanted to have some kind of proof.

I may have not been smart enough to pick up on the fact that these are just designed by Fathom, but I would think to any end user, listing them as Fathom 80, Fathom 90 would mean I'm getting a "Fathom" Lens. This is just about being clear and avoiding issues like this and p!$$ed off customers feeling ripped off.

All it takes is "UOM 110 Lens $3999.00 Fathom Designed UOM Manufactured, under liscense to Fathoms exact design. Then everyone would know what they are getting and paying for. And of course you may be right, an original "Fathom" lens might be even more expensive, but how would we know when we thought we were already getting a Fathom lens?

This is not a Fathom issue, this is a Light & Motion issue, they are the ones not being clear.

Paul from Fathom was just giving good customer service (And now I realise I'm not even one of his customers!)

And also, lets not forget, there are no complaints about the quality of the image through these lenses, it's about being told you are buying one thing, and getting another.

Also Paul never said any negative thing about the actual lenses, just that they weren't "Actual" Fathom Lenses. I was trying to get the lens corrected to avoid the Image Stabilisation vignetting issues, and he was quite rightly telling me, I can't get the problem fixed, oh and by the way, it isn't one of ours.

It isn't, and in no way was Paul being duplicitous.

Personally I think the best solution would be for Light & Motion to start selling ACTUAL Fathom lenses!

Lets keep our eye on the fact that Light & Motion should be more clear about what we are buying from them.

  2. If additional clarification is needed, please visit fathomimaging.com where all the lenses WE DESIGN AND MANUFACTURE IN THE USA are listed. The website also contains compatibility specifications for every lens Fathom Imaging offers.

Fathom Imaging has recently started to work directly with Light and Motion to design, develop and manufacture a “Fathom” lens for the Canon S10. We hope that this working relationship with Light and Motion will continue to grow and they will be able to offer future products that feature a “Fathom” lens.

If there are still any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us at fathomimaging.com or at 413-245-3996.

  3. Thanks for chiming in Dawn.

According to your website, none of the current Fathom lenses are compatible with the new crop of cameras from Canon/Sony, including the HF, XR series. Yet a few of the manufacturers using the UOM produced lenses market their lenses as compatible.

I think the most confusing part of this issue is the "Fathom designed" UOM lenses is the designations of these lenses, eg Fathoms/WP80. If it is at all possible, can you to list the equivalent lens models to the original Fathom lenses, eg WP110 = SWP25b etc without breaking any confidentiality? It doesn't have to be on Wetpixel but I think having some sort of guide on official Fathom products vs licenced manufacturers would clear up some of the confusion and also act as a guide for potential buyers.

It certainly is better than having irate customers ranting about products that don't work etc.
