Canon SD90IS, same sensor as G11

  1. Will Fantasea have a S90 housing with threaded port?

I kind of doubt it. It's got a very long lens throw.

  2. Actually it does not, I measured it. It does, once the camera is turned on, project out but the range from full out to full in is very small over it's zoom range if you follow, about like the Canon 570 in all regards.

But, thanks for the info, sorry to hear that, was hoping for additional options.

  3. There will be vignetting according to Fantasea's tech support. Using an adapter with the wide angle lenses moves the lens away from the port. Whether or not it is objectionable is hard to know, but you will loose FOV.

The BE G10/11 does not have vignetting.

    Hi Jack,

not sure what you mean by be g10/g11? Ideally looking for a recommendation for my setup, g11, oem housing and eiter the fantasea big eye dome port or the m67adapter with the inon uwl100 or similar? I've also got an inon z240. Appreciate might be a difficult call until a few more people get the camera.

My preference would be the inon option as it's then much easier to remove the lense for macro shots etc!

    Cheers all!

  4. I don't want to get O.T. here. G10 or G11 Markol, they take the same lens or adapter. You will get vignetting with the adapter.

Yes, I guess you can say lens length rather than throw. At any rate it won't fit. I don't speak for them, if you want it ask them for it.

  5. There are now 67mm versions of all the BigEye W/A , SharpEye Macro (4x) and RedEye red filters in 67mm

So if it takes 67mm then they will fit. They fit other Ike 67mm ports.

At least that what Eye know...;-)

    Jack

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the BigEye is just a dome, right? It restores the true 28mm "wide angle" to the built-in lens, but it's not a true wide angle in my book...it's not a WA wet lens, nor does it allow you use one, it's just a dome. What's the FOV on that sort of setup?

  6. Here is how you make an adapter, you get a 67mm ND filter and remove the glass, you get an old Inon AD adapter on Ebait, you remove the bayonet section from the Inon adapter and then set it into the threaded ring, carefully position it, pour thick 30 minute epoxy around the exterior, let it set up, voila, AD to 67 mm adapter. You will have to carefully, file, sand, machine (in my case) the pieces to fit as close as possible to the camera housing port. This will work for both macro and wide angle depending upon the camera and housing, it will always work for macro, wide angle has other issues.

Awesome! Now, how much will you charge me to do this work? LOL

I don't have the tools or the inclination for a DIY approach. But if I'm going to get the Ike case I definitely need a way to connect my AD lenses.

At this point I'm considering returning my S90 while I'm still within my 30 days, and waiting for the dust to settle. Once it does, I'll have a better idea if I want to bite the bullet and get a G11 or if the S90 will work for me. I definitely want some real WA options this time around. I'm sick of looking at the great shots my buddy is getting with her SD990 and Inon Fisheye lens... camera and OEM housing together cost about the same than the S80 alone, let alone adding the housing!

  7. The FOV of the BE is about 80 degrees. So if you have a 28mm lens above water that's what you'll have below. Not the best, but a good coverage for many people.

  8. You will never get those lenses on the G10/G11.

As to the S90, you might oughta take it back until this all settles out, it could be months before all choices are fully realized. The way I see it, for me, I have several choices:

    1. I continue to shoot my still developing A570 for another year as this all settles out.

    2. I get a S90 with Ikelite housing and become irritated when somebody offers a better housing including Ikelite.

    3. I build my own S90 housing, of which I am fully capable of doing despite being intolerably lazy and preoccupied with other interests and twice as poor as one year ago.

    4. I make the jump to dSLR three days before a digital Nikonos is offered.

  9. Nice work! What would you charge me for one?

Turns out I'm keeping the camera. Mother ****ing restocking charges... Best Buy can bite me.

Edit: (wow, no swear filters on this board!)

  10. Recently I sold my Sony and looked at both the G11 & S90. Got a G11 as it fit my hands better. Pleased with results so far topside.

At DEMA I looked at housings for the G11 & S90.

The plastic housing sold by Canon looked OK for the G11 - the size & price were good, OK access to functions, feel of shutter lever was just OK. Odd rectangular front port.

The Lexan housing sold by Ikelite for the G11 looked good. You can add their slip-on dome port to restore full 28mm or add a macro lens. *

The machined housing by SeaTool (prototype shown) was far lighter & more compact than the Ikelite, but $$$ more.

The S90 Lexan housing by Ikelite was a little gem. VERY compact (would fit in a drysuit thigh pocket). Has access to the front control ring. Will take screw-in WA & close-up lenses.*

I was told SeaTool has a tiny machined housing for the S90 on the way. *

    * what sales reps told me, please verify yourself.

  11. I read a report from DEMA that Fisheye FIX is working on a prototype S90 housing, as well.

I'm going to end up, I think, with a Canon OEM housing... to start. Once the dust settles, I'll look at other options and kick the Canon to backup status.

  12. Edit: (wow, no swear filters on this board!)
