Canon 20D & 10-22mm

I get a 404 on the camera body page but the lens looks sweet.
A digital lens - I guess Canon won't be making a full frame camera now. Oh wait...never mind. :-) lol

The camera body page went down about two minutes after Canon USA's webmaster walked in the door... oops

-
This is just priceless...
"lets not remove the page, lets just put 'del' in front of the camera name. That'll stop em

I already grabbed the photos and specs and posted on the Wetpixel homepage.

Anyone have any more info. I got to the website too late and it was down del or not. Any info on pricing and availability date? Also, anyone know what the FOV of the 10-22 mm is? I assume its rectalinear and so still less than the 10.5 FE. But perhaps better than the 12-24mm?
On the surface here it looks like Canon made some huge strides here particularly for UW photo shooters. They seem to have addressed two of the biggest reasons for underwater shooters to go Nikon.
1) No wide angle for digital now the 10-22mm
2) Choices of cheesy build quality of the Rebel vs age/lens incompatability and price of the 10D shifted in some cases toward D70.
I speculate that the 20D will have similur build to the 10D at a similur price. It looks like it will also be compatable with both the digital and film lenses from Canon just like the Rebel.
I'm still glad that Nikon kept the mount the same for digital and film lenses so there is no compatability issue besides image circle. 10D users will likely not be able to take advantage of the 10-22mm

The 17-85 looks like a good walkaround lens. More wide angle and zoom to boot. I would have like to see an additional stop of aperture too but maybe they will make up for it by keeping the price down to less than $500.
More megapixels is always welcome but the people to really be excited about this are at Sandisk and Lexar because they will be getting more of our money when we attempt to store all these larger images.
So being released now it'll probably be on shelves in time for Christmas. Housings will have to wait another 6 months I'm afraid. A lot of manufacturers still don't have their D70 housings out yet 5 months after release.

Yep, this is great news for underwater. I've been keen for a few more pixels (??is this the 1DMk2 sensor??). A few more FPS and hopefully better AF rounds off the main asks. EF-S lens compatibility and a 10-22 for underwater = sweet.
I'm hoping this fits in the 10D Ikelite housing!
-
I haven't done the photo comparison yet, but the 20D and 10D look very much alike. I think there may be some very happy people (both users and housing manufacturers) if the 20D fits in the 10D housing.
There are images in the article on the wetpixel homepage if anyone cares to do the comparison.

Here are some specs I found posted in the Canon forum on dpreview. I can't vouch for the reliability of the source but here it is:

5fps Continuous speed
25 frame buffer
EF-s support
E-TTL II support
0.2sec startup time
50g lighter than 10D
Price US$1600 RRP
(Street price should be closer to 1300 they say)
August 20 - Announcement
September 20 - On Sale
Also 2 Lenses will be announced at launch of 20D
EF-s 10-22mm /f 3.5-4.5
EF-s 17-85mm /f 4-5.6 IS (Will be sold with 20D also like the 300D)
It looks exciting.
near instantanious startup, higher max shutter speed to match D70, higher frame rate-buffer, bundled as a kit with the lens. Good flash system. Good pricing.
Too bad it's not 1.3 crop like the MK II.
I don't regret my D70 purchase and I won't be switching but if I were making my decision today I might have gone with Canon.
-
I don't think it's the max shutterspeed that matters - it's the max SYNC speed - which hasn't been announced yet.
Also, if it were a 1.3x crop, then it would not work with their new 10-22mm lens. So 1.6x is ok.

Check out the comments and the image I posted in the article on the homepage:

Well, worst case, look at the images directory. There's shots of the 20d and the 10-22.

There's also a low-res directory at:

So based on this I wonder if we can expect a firmware upgrade for the Rebel?
Seeing as how the hack is out. Now that would also be great news!

I don't think it's the max shutterspeed that matters - it's the max SYNC speed - which hasn't been announced yet.
Ok we'll have to wait to see what the sync speed is but so far without TTL for most rigs (except yours) the sync speed isn't really relevant--you set whatever shutter speed you want and you get whatever you get of the flash reset and try again.
Help me out on my technique here also (learning) but I've been using high shutter speeds on sunburst silouettes to prevent blowing out the sunburst. In this case I don't use a strobe so sync is not an issue. Is there a better way to do this?
There are the two advantages I see with electronic shutter.
-
Your thinking is correct. High shutterspeeds help a lot to freeze sunrays and make the sun look more pleasing. It will also darken the rest of the water though. However, this is not correct:
you set whatever shutter speed you want and you get whatever you get of the flash reset and try again. If you exceed the maximum shutter sync speed, part of your photo will be black because it is obscured by the second curtain. That trick only works if your camera uses an electronic shutter. The D70 is the only DSLR known to have an electronic shutter (well, maybe the D1_ had it too).

Based on Jame's layout of the buttons, and if the new 20D isn't thicker than the 10D, then the important controls are inline with my Subal C10 housing...however, if I were to get the 20D, I'd keep the 10D in the housing and use the 20D for topside, specifically flight shots of birds, given the faster frame rate and larger buffer...if the 20D fits (and it should) then it will be the backup body if something happens to the 10D.
8.2 MP is nice, but as I've been successful in blowing my 10D images to poster size, 1 is being made into a billboard...the higher pixel count isn't a big draw.
my 2 cents.

The difference in resolution between 6 and 8.2 megapixels is small. Remember, resolution is in lines per inch not megapixels and it only goes up as a small factor related to the height and width. If the sensor is indeed 8.2 megapixels, then it might be 3500 x 2350 or something close. So in my opinion, the other features, such as AF and FPS over-ride the extra 500 pixels wide and 350 pixels tall that you get.

I'm struggling with the specs and the price. Everyone thought the MkII was going to come in at $3000 and it came in at $4500. With the AF, FPS, buffer, and pixel increase, I can't see it costing $1600.
I guess I'm being cynical, but as the saying goes it feels like "something's got to give" whether it's price or framerate.
Guess we'll see soon.
BTW, I tend to agree with James, the AF and FPS would be the bigger improvement over the resolution, especially since noise is likely to increase with packing more pixels in the same size chip. Makes me wonder if the specs are just wishful thinking and maybe the pixels are staying the same at 6Mp...

Looks like I was wrong about that 12-25

Wonder when Wasia will get his hands on the 20D and get us Reb users a higher buffer rate ........ just kidding, of course
