Olympus 7-14 mm f2.8 will not fit in Nauticam housings

  1. First let me say that both the Olympus 7-14 F/2.8 and the Olympus 8mm F/1.8 fisheye are even more impressive in the flesh than in the photos on the interweb. I used the 8mm last week and it is excellent with. Both lenses are being tested and the main issue is getting the correct port extension for the very best possable corner sharpness for the port size. I am sure both Nauticam and ZEN will have solutions for these lenses around the time that they are released.

The build quality and image quality of both lenses exceeds what we have seen from M43 wide lenses so far.

  2. Just noticed that Nauticam USA have an update on their Facebook page stating "Testing the new 7-14mm f2.8 PRO in the pool" so we will probably know more very soon.

  3. Has anyone heen able to physically fit-test the new 7-14mm in a Nauticam?

A quick measure of my adapter port this morning showed a 78mm inside diameter. This was with a tape measure, not a protractor so may not be completely accurate. I am hopful that the adapter / port assembly will fit over the new 7-14mm

For those unfamiliar with the 180mm port, extension ring and adapter they have internal locking mechanisms to lock the components together. Basically you put your camera in the housing, attach the lens from the outside, THEN slide the completed port assembly & adapter over the lens. The completed port assembly is locked in place using the mechanism on the side of housing.

The million dollar question appears to be is the internal diameter of the M4/3 to SLR adapter ring wide enough to fit over the new Oly 7-14?

The Oly 7-14 is listed at Maximum diameter: 78.9mm . The internal diameter of the 36052 port adapter is only 76 mm.

    Thanks for the teaser.

You probably need 70 mm extention for the 7-14 mm (47+22,7) so the best guess is that you tried it with the 36204 60 mm extension with the external locking function.

For the fisheye, the previous 4,33" minidome might be good with an additional 30 mm extension...

That's fine , but will the curve of the 4,33 minidome be good for the 8mm of Olympus , not leading to the issue of softcorner as we already undergo a little with the 8 mm Pana use with the 4,33 and 3,5 as well , ???

  7. Here is a short Pana vs Oly 7-14 mm review at Mirror lessons:

    http://www.mirrorlessons.com/2015/05/28/olympus-7-14-2-8-pro-review/

The Lumix 7-14mm proves an excellent competitor despite being a much older lens.

Given the added difficulties (and expenses) of using the Oly 7-14 under water you might think twice about it being a significant enough upgrade...

I feel that the M43 system really need a 7 mm prime! I hardly zoom with my 7-14 mm that much under water, and a quality 7 mm would surely be smaller and weight less than this 7-14 PRO. Maybe Panasonic can surprise us!

  8. We tried it in the Nauticam E-M1 housing and it will require that you add the camera body first into the housing, then the lens as with the 12-40mm. But it will need a much wider port body to fit the lens and a zoom gear. My guess is the the Nauticam N85 (MIL) to N120 (DSLR) 40mm ext adapter with zoom control, plus about a 50-60mm N120 extension and Nauticam 180mm N120 (DSLR) dome (or larger) should work fine. But Nauticam has not released a guide yet as they are still testing these new lenses.

We have a "first look" article on our blog here.

  9. The extension ring is the same part used with the Olympus 43 series housings (E-300, E-330, E-400/410 %20 Ect.) for use with the 1.4X teleconverter. The extender could be used to add the TC to the 50mm macro lens or to extend the 8mm fisheye. These parts are also sold by Inon, Athena and more. The dome is the same 170mm optical glass port used with the Old 43 Olympus 7-14 and a longer extension. The only new part is the gear.

The new port for the 8 mm F/1.8 Pro is already in the Q at http://reefphoto.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=8289

Unfortunately the new Olympus E-M5 MKII housing reverts back to the PEN housings port system.

So this solution is only for the E-M1 and E-M5 as stated in the press release, and not the new E-M5 mark II...

    Underwater Lens Port, PPO-E04

When combined with the Underwater Case for the OM-D E-M1 (PT-EP11) or Underwater Case for the OM-D E-M5 (PT-EP08), the ultra wide (weitwinkel)-angle zoom lens can be used for underwater photography

Interesting as the link you provide lists the pt-ep12, pt-ep13 & pt-ep10 as being compatible with the port.

Obviously those are housings with the same PEN port design as before.

There must be an adapter for the port or someone made a mistake.

  12. I've just received this lens and run a few initial tests: it fits fine, just needs to be mounted from the front just like the Olympus 12-40mmF2.8Pro:

Here is a blog post with video

So, I am happy to report that it does fit – and while Nauticam have yet to confirm optimum port options, I reckon the 180mm dome with the correct adapter/spacer will work, just as it does for the Panasonic 7-14mm. Looking forward to testing this underwater...

  13. Great man!

Given that the Oly is approx 23 mm longer the 20 mm extension is not far away from optimal.

Just a brief question: How is the dome locked in place on the port adapter given that there is no external lock function (as far as I know)?

Also any chance to compare it to the Pany 7-14 mm under water?

  14. Espen,

For my 12-40 lens and 180mm dome port set up there are internal locks that keep the dome port, extension ring, and adapter connected. You need a small screwdriver or pen to manipulate the lever to unlock them.

The entire assembly then slides over the 12-40 lens and then is locked into place by the port lock on the side of the Nauticam Housing. From what Mobula say's it will also fit over the 7-14 lens

I can try to send images of the locking mechanisms tomorrow. Or maybe someone can locate an image online?

    Regards,

I have the 180 mm glass dome and the 36052 port adaptor.

What is shown in the video is mounting the 7-14 PRO inside the allready installed 36052 port adaptor. So far so good. Yo can not slide the final assembly over the lens. That's the whole issue.

As far as I can tell it's then impossible to lock the 180 mm dome to the port adaptor!?

Some of the longer port adaptors for the Sony e-mount system has an external lock function, but the 36052 adaptor has not (probably because there was no space for it).

  16. This is all very interesting - looks like there will be a solution (perhaps) - as, as John has shown physically it fits. (Great news)

The questions now comes, all of us with the 7-14mm - is it worth the upgrade? I feel perhaps not (given the side by side land reviews) but look forward to seeing some of the results!

  17. As always this also depends on which body you use. For Oly users more of a no brainer.

For Pana users, you will not achieve DFD autofocus with Oly lenses (so far implented in the GH4 and G7).

  18. The revised Nauticam port chart for Mirrorless M43 housings shows two gears for Olympus 7-14mm F/2.8, #36054 & #36055, also N85 to N120, 55mm extension #36401 and Optical glass port #18809 the 180mm port. Same system also works for 12-40mm F/2.8 with gear #36045.

The Olympus 8mm F/1.8 Fisheye port system is not yet posted, but I am sure will come soon.

  19. The only surprise here is the rather short extension compared to the Pana 7-14. 47 vs 55 mm.

#36401 is an existing adapter btw.

For the Oly 12-40 it raises the question of which solution (55 vs 67 mm) which actually places the lens in the optimal nodal position of the dome.
