New Nauticam 29 port for Panasonic 14-42mm PZ could be a blast for 4K video shooters

  1. Coming soon is a new shorter port for the Panasonic 14-42 Power Zoom lens. The port is 29mm and the idea is to put the lens as close as possible to the port.

Some test shots with the WWL-1 indicate that quality is great link to smugmug here https://nauticam.smugmug.com/HousingTests/NA-EM5II/

When used with the Panasonic 4K digital cameras the resulting crop makes the lens near to rectilinear, what is more interesting you can zoom through the lens without quality loss .

With the combination of CMC and WWL-1 and bayonet system together with the Panasonic 14-42mm power zoom in the new 29 port or 14-42 II in the normal 35 port you can achieve a compact experience with a micro four third camera.

  2. Thanks. Port chart (WWL-1 options currently shown in red). Sounds like a reasonable way to get an all-round system. One issue is how to store the WWL-1 when it's off.

  3. Do nauticam have a baynet system now, like INON?

This looks a great way, like Nick says of staying with your Mirrorless system, yet not having all the fuss of the ports.

It does make you wonder mind, with them releasing a 'new' port for the 14-42PZ - how many other ports aren't really optically optimised for their intended lenses....

I still personally think the 6" dome for the 7-14mm doesn't provide the correct nodal point...

  4. I understanding bayonet system will be specific to Nauticam and not compatible with Inon, because the WWL-1 rear lens is too big to fit the Inon system. I will have the system in 10 days to bench test it and will post some pictures on my blog with the details. I think it is costly to develop a port for a specific lens and frankly for a flat port it doesn't make too much difference. You can clearly see that the PZ and the 12-32 lenses sit somewhat far from the glass but the 14-42 mega OIS fits the macro 35 port perfectly. I think what Nauticam is saying is that if you want optimal results and maximum field of view you need a specific port. Interestingly I was pushing them to develop a zoom gear for the 14-42 mega OIS and they have done it now. This lens that can come as a cheap kit lens does not have power zoom but optically is equal if not better than the PZ so I am glad Nauticam have addressed both my concerns

  5. So, beside storage issues carrying the WWL-1, this could be a great way to shoot wide angle and "portrait" in the same dive. But is the any way to fit a flip system or a bayonet close up lense to the macro Port 29 to add macro to the whole system?
    Does it make any sense?

  6. Nauticam has developed a bayonet system as well what will work with this port

  7. Where can I see all this system detailed?

    Thnks

  8. I Can't find any info about this. I already purchased my NA-GH4 housing with the 6" dome (to be used with both the 7-14 and the 12-35) but I'm not able to define my step to the macro gear.

  9. I have all the parts and will post some pictures soon

  10. Here's some shots of the bayonet system. The WWL1 will come with the removable bayonet ring and then you buy the one for the housing. The CMC/SMC has a seperate adaptor. They will have a "park" for the arm for one or two lenses. The mount features a large and secure locking lever and the bayonets mesh better than the Inon one, IMHO.

  11. I have posted the whole set of images for all parts on my blog

You can see the M67 adapter with the specific tool to attach it, the adapter for the CMC/SMC and the lens holder for the arm segments

I will show the WWL-1 and how it works (it needs an adapter) on the next posts

  12. So the WWL-1 does not come with both parts of the bayonet, right? Means I would have to buy one of these for a 67mm port, right?

  13. Thanks. Do you have any feel for how the [14-42mm PZ + WWL-1] would compare with the [Panasonic 8mm fisheye + 6" acrylic port] for "wide angle macro" type work. e.g. Something small up close (anemonefish perhaps) with a wide reef scene behind?

You mean 4.33" port as the 6" would vignette with the 8mm?

    Yes, sorry, I do.

Basically I'm wondering if I can use the WWL-1 instead of my [8mm FE + 4.33" dome] or [7-14mm + 180mm dome], without losing quality, or perhaps even gaining some quality.

  16.

or perhaps even gaining some quality.

We would be gaining OIS - which would be a cool addition.

Will await some testing - but looks like the 29 Port, bayonet system and the WWL will be on my shopping list.

  17. The WWL-1 is not rectilinear so the comparison with the 7-14mm is unfair the corners are better thought with the WWL-1. Compared to the 8mm the WWL has less field of view and is near to rectilinear in the centre. For wam could be a good option for larger subjects on a reef. Will do some corner comparisons of you wish but the WWL-1 effectively preserves the same lens performance in water. To that note the normal 14-42 kit lens is better than the lower zoom in the corners

  18. How about putting the wwl-1 in front of the 2.5/14 Panasonic pancake? That should provide a better base than the zoom...

How was the corner performance of the wwl1 vs the 8mm fisheye?

  19. I think the 14mm is too short for the 29 port and as the glass moves away from the lens it could both vignette and degrade image quality. You probably need an even shorter port for the 14mm. Using the zoom on the 14-42mm is actually a great way to leverage the lens as it becomes eventually rectilinear
