It's not Katmai with a dozen massive bears just sitting there all day. We saw 4-5 individual bears that returned over the 4 days we were there. Fortunately the stream was full of chum and pink salmon. Typically there would only be one bear in the creek at a time. They would be there for a hour or so, grabbing 3-4 salmon, disappearing into the bushes to eat and then wade back in. The boardwalk is open 6am to 10pm and the bears know the schedule. A bear would typically be there right at opening, gone during midday and back right at 9pm. Mornings had the fewest people there, 12 or so, but builds to 40-50 throughout the day. It can get a little crazy trying to keep ahead of the bears as they move upstream. People are all trying to get on the railing to see them. The stream GoPro footage was shot in another stream a mile north of the Fish Creek. Small stream, tall bushes along the banks, we had to be really loud and careful, bear spray at the ready, lol.

Very cool images and video. I especially liked the UW sequences of the salmon, it adds so much to this story. Thanks for sharing!

Alaska is epic. I did a similar trip a few years ago. Anyone thinking of going - just do it!
