I've been a light and motion fan for the longest time for my dive and focus lights, mainly because they are self-contained and no fuss. You just dry them and charge (no need to open them up, no battery changes, no need to take care of o-rings, etc.). I love the simple operation as well with the intuitive magnetic switches and interface.

But since L&M have closed down, I am now looking for alternative dive lights and focus lights that are also self-contained and simple to operate. I would greatly appreciate if someone could point me to a similar product or offering.

So far, I have not found any other lights or brands that operates with the same self-contained philosophy.

There are several lights that include USB-C charge ports in the flashlight body. Check out the OrcaTorch DC710 as an example. It has a replaceable 21700 battery which can be charged in or out of the light with a standard USB-C cable and your phone or similar charger.

I’m of the opposite view. The problem with the self contained lights is that they are effectively disposable once the battery dies. But I do understand the appeal.

I’ve been looking at Kraken lights and have decided on the 1800 WSR. It has wide, spot, and red lights, is dimmable, and uses a USB-C rechargeable battery. So it’s not simple and ticks none of your boxes! But it seems to be a good combination of focus light and secondary dive light.

If you are looking for minimal maintenance, the INON torches are good, they include an additional sand seal that the torch head contacts when you screw it down, it seems to be good enough to exclude any water and grit, so that if the torch is dried off externally you just unscrew the head, give a quick visual and screw it back on after changing batteries. I have never seen any water or grit on the o-rings and and have greased and cleaned them once in about 5 years.

Operation is quite simple just a knob you turn to switch on, it's comes on in low power and you screw it in further and it goes to high power. Quite bright enough for a focus light. I'm a fan of low power focus lights, you really don't need a super bright light and even their 350 lumen model with the 30° beam is enough to grab focus for macro work. I generally add the 60° diffuser that is included. They also have a tight 5° deg model which has good range for use as a dive light, believe it is popular as a spotting light for black water dives. You don't need to remember button sequences to turn them on, just a simple twist knob.

I agree with Chris. The Inon torches are very good. I had the 1100F model until last week when it and a Zeagle pouch complete with magnifying glass, disappeared in Triton Bay first dive of my trip.

I like it so much I ordered a (sadly) more expensive replacement as the 1100F model is no longer available. But as Chris sets out, ease of use of the Inons, power as a dive light or focus light are both good. And I really like that it doesn’t need a bespoke charger or battery. (I had an L&M Sola before)

I have the older Kraken 1500 and I like it still. I like that it has a mode that momentarily shuts off the focus light when the strobes fire. But, it from time to time requires me to beat on it for it to work. I found that the little battery spring was flat. I fixed that. Then, oddly, after many dives and despite a good rinse down, I found severe corrosion, as in pieces missing, under the saddle clamp where it abuts the forward light section, happened in one day of diving. I used emory paper and black paint to repair and so far, so good. But it is evident that I will need a new one sooner than latter.

L&M may have thrown in the towel too soon :(.

Wait what!? You can directly charge the battery with a USB-C cable? I feel like I have been living under a rock. One reason I did not like batteries was the need for a bulky charging cable. Thanks for the suggestion. I'll look into this light. The UI not sure if I can like it. But you've given me a search term that will widen my potential net of focus lights i.e. the USB-C charging 21700.
