Whale Photography: Dominican Republic or French Polynesia?

Featured Replies

I'm interested in photographing whales up close while snorkeling, and I'm trying to decide between two destinations: the Dominican Republic and French Polynesia.

From what I understand, snorkeling with whales in the Dominican Republic is generally easier due to calmer sea conditions. However, there can sometimes be quite a few people in the water at the same time (about 10)

French Polynesia, on the other hand, seems to offer a more authentic and intimate experience, with smaller groups. The downside is that sea conditions can be more challenging and may occasionally require some strenuous swimming.

I'm a certified scuba diver with around 100 dives under my belt, but I'm not a particularly strong or fit swimmer.

Has anyone experienced whale snorkeling in either of these destinations? I'd really appreciate hearing your thoughts, especially regarding sea conditions, the physical effort required, group sizes, and photography opportunities.

Thanks in advance!
