Essential Spares for Underwater Photography?
brightnight replied to brightnight's topic in General Chat
Not yet! I bought a used housing and was told to check housing handles often as they can crack and break. Heading on a two week photo trip and it got me thinking...I never expected that and it could completely derail my trip. Is that a common problem and what else could break that I wouldn't expect that might derail the trip. -
What are your essential spares that you bring on an underwater photography trip? It seems like if any one thing breaks it would be a huge problem and could derail the trip. Do you bring spare camera housing handles, extra strobe, mask/snorkle, Eztra O-rings, etc? Are there any items on housings such as camera handles that experience has taught you are most likely to break?

I'm suprised Sony isn't at the top. While I shoot a canon all I see to hear about is people raving about Sony.

I know the WACP-1 would never actually be used for above water shots but will above water shots be blurry? In testing the WACP-1 out my above water shots my shots were blurry but haven't had a chance to confirm everything looks sharp underwater. I assumed because it was a dry lens pictures would be sharp either way but perhaps it's just the lens correction that causes issues above water.

I’m looking to put GoPro’s underwater to film for a few hours but the batteries won’t last that long in cold water. Therefore, I’m looking for a small case that would give me room to put the camera and a few extra batteies to keep the camera powered. 3D printing is also an option but would have to dig into O-ring groove design and figured there are better options out there. Thinking it’s probably a DIY solution but could be purchased too. Anyone have any suggestions that won’t break the bank? Case will be less than 10ft deep. There are two main problems that I see. 1) Finding a waterproof case. My understanding is that most cases that are avertised as "waterproof" aren't actually meant to be underwater for hours at a time. Pelican cases for example are IP67 meaning they are rated for up to 1 meter underwater for 30 minutes. 2) If I don't find a clear case for the GoPro to look out, I could attach a dome to the case so the camera can look out but not sure how to waterproof it to the case. Perhaps epoxy?

Photo Editing Software Suggestions
brightnight replied to brightnight's topic in Shooting Technique, Workflow and Editing
$10/month isn't that bad, I wonder if I was looking at the wrong plan pricing -
What are most folks using to edit their RAW photos? If I wasn't so frustrated by the subsciption model and the annual expense ($264/year forever) I'd just use Photoshop, but Adobe has in my opinion put the customer second and slaps you with early termination fees and you have to sign up for a certain number of months, etc. I have a ~8 year old version of photoshop (pre-subscuption) I could probably dig up which might be my best option but wondering if there is something better out there and I don't mind buying it. Expect to publish some images but never been one to dramatically change and image.

Thank you so much! After reading your post and talking to Russ at Backscatter the normal viewfinder is in. I didn't realize the silver colored metal piece on my 180° viewfinder is supposed to stay in the housing. Once I removed the retaining O-ring and put that back on the housing everything fits as it should. The 180° viewfinder came with my housing and I had purchased the standard viewfinder afterwards so assumed it was just a complete swap. I didn't realize the insert came off and lived with the housing and having been trying to figure this out for the last month. If others run into this in the future, this video was helpful:

I have the "enhanced 180° viewfinder" which fits into the back of my Nauticam 5dmIII housing perfectly (below), but I want to use a small viewfinder to reduce the housing size and weight. null I thought this Nauticam Replacement Optical 0.66x Viewfinder was the correct one: https://www.backscatter.com/Nauticam-Replacement-Optical-0.66x-Viewfinder However, when I try to use the standard viewfinder there s a few mm of space around the viewfinder. My housing has a hole diameter of 32mm and the standard viewfinder has a diameter of 28mm: null Is there another metal round piece that I need to buy that fills the gap around the one for the standard viewfinder or did I buy the wrong viewfinder? The only metal piece I have is threaded and goes on the 180 degree viewfinder so it doesn't work on the standard viewfinder.

Recently had to carry my camera a few miles to the shoot location. Even with the strobes in my backpack it was too much weight to carry holding onto the lanyard. Seems like the lanyard is great short distances but not long distances. It forced me to hold your camera out away from my body because of my viewfinderwhich made it much harder to hold. Thinking something like a long padded shoulder strap might be perfect for this type of application. Something like: https://www.amazon.com/Shoulder-ZINZ-Padded-Adjustable-Replacement/dp/B07J5NNV4J Don't really want to haul a pelican case out there and don't think I want to pack it into a backpack with a dome on it. Would require a very large backpack and even with a dome cover on it I'd be worried about scratching it but open any any suggestions. Is there a better way to carry my camera to site?

looking for a printed N120 Housing Body Cap

Started designing a N120 cap and decided to do a more intensive search online. Found one on Thingiverse and is slightly loose but seems to work fine. There is also a female version on that site made by the same user so credit to the creator: dsiviero. looking for a printed N120 Housing Body Cap
brightnight replied to brightnight's topic in Tutorials, How-Tos, DIY
Can do, would be a lot easier if I can find a drawing/specs for what a N85 cap looks like. Easy to model my N120 cap off what I have and test fit, harder with a N85 that I don't have but will give it a shot and maybe you can print it and tell me if it fits or I can mail you some pieces -
Was looking to print a N120 Housing Body Cap but haven't been able to find a file for it. Anyone know if one exists? Looks easy to design but figured I'd ask before spending time on it.

Interesting, I wasn't aware it was a real email service. I often see weird odd names for phishing sites and assumed it was something like that but glad you pointed out it's legit, will have to check it out.

If you don't know the person, I would strongly suggest paying with paypal good and services. The fee Paypal charges will let you fight the charge if they don't send something within a specified amount of time. Also, list the items in the transaction description before sending money so if you do have to esclate a case to Paypal the scammer can't try to write the money off for a non deliverable good such as "web services" Red Flags to Me: -Price to good to be true -Suggestionsto use a weird email address with an non normal domain name to talk to someone that isn't on theis site -Pressuring you to send money in a method which gives you no recourse when an item isn't sent -Lack of responses -Insulting you -Spaces in name of email, probably to hide it from programs scraping the forum to protect you -Check how long to account has been active and their activity -Even accounts with lots of experience can be hacked and the user impersonated so stay sharp! -Most scammers will try to use VPN's to access this site so you might be able to check with a moderator to see if they are using one Scam email example from this website:

First time I've mounted my 7" monitor and no surprise...it's big and heavy. Assume it will be the same story in the water. Is there a better way to mount or orient it other than what I have pictured? Seems like the farther away the monitor is from the housing the longer the lever and the easier it can move around. null null I say this having no experience mounting or using a monitor but I feel the desire to hard mount it to two or three locations on the housing and only use the screen tilt if that makes sense. Curious what has worked for others.
