Upcoming Panasonic GH-4K

At Las Vegas's CES Panasonic displayed an upcoming GH-4K. (Actually it was just a GH3 with a 4K sticker).

Nobody knows if the new model will have the same GH3 body or not...

Rumors sites write that it will be launched officially on 7th February. So just this friday

Anyway these are the rumored specs until now:

• High speed 16Mp sensor
• 2.36Mp OLED EVF
• peaking
• 4K 200Mbps mode
• 1080p120
• 422 recording

Panasonic announced also a new SD card expressely made to cope with 4K:

A second round of rumors add few more specs:

• There is an attachable XLR adapter
• H264 codec all intra that give 422 color all intra in 100 mbps.
• it will be switch-able from 4K and 1080P with various frame rates (can shoot 120fps at 1080P for example)

Last but not the least: price less than 2000USD

Expanding business opportunities with unified codec

Panasonic has developed a new LSI codec engine to perform a variety of encoding/decoding processes defined in the AVC-ULTRA codec. Figure 12 shows the appearance of the LSI and the photo of the LSI chip. The codec engine supports H.264/AVC profiles for professional applications, “CAVLC 4:4:4 Intra”, “High 4:2:2 Intra”, “High 10 Intra”, and “High 4:2:2”, up to Level 5.2 for 4K. This codec engine also has the ability to encode/decode the conventional DVCPRO codec family as well as the newly developed AVC-ULTRA. Incorporating the codec processor chip and high speed memory chips all within a single small package increases reliability and greatly reduces power consumption..

This new codec engine unifies AVC-Intra, AVC-LongG and AVC-Proxy and also supports from HD to 4K formats. An AVC-ULTRA product implementing this engine can support many formats and can be expanded by upgrading. Users can select optimum video formats and codec schemes depending on their target applications, workflow, and estimated budgets for production and it expands their business opportunity with minimum investments.

These are the new SD cards for 4K/2K content allegedly used on the new camera. Kingston just jumped on the bandvagon today

The replacement for Canon 7D is also rumored to be announce this Friday. Not sure if Canon would suprise everyone with a 4K capable prosumer sLR because at point in time, spending thousands of dollar for a 1080p capable only camera is just no point.

Good news for us. using some photoshop and some GH3 images, it appears exactly the same body and button configuration (YAY NA-GH3 will fit!)

Only difference I can see is the eye cup and the mode dial - looks a tiny bit taller (but could be the angle of the photo)

Hummm Nauticam housing fits like golves, even the smallest difference .... keep your finger crossed.

You know.... there is one BIG difference - I've just seen...

There is a button inside the top of the control dial and difference markings....

Perhaps you have to engage/press that top button to unlock the control dial?

That extra 2mm - maybe from the new eyecup design.

Now this camera has been in peoples hands - i do wonder if anyone has actually tried to stick it in a NA-GH3 housing.....

Size-wise, button-wise and shape-wise its all a massive goer for a 'cheap' upgrade from the GH3, using all your existing housings etc - but that locking control dial is a) slightly taller b) not usable unless you can engage the middle button.

I suppose from a keep it cheap idea, just stuck it in M mode and be done with it

Upper part is different so I don't know if it fits inside a nauticam housing.

RE the lock button - haven't seen it in action from any video yet - but do you need to depress it while turning (like my old Olympus E-1) or are you thinking its lockable..?

I think Nauticam don't need to do a 'new' housing.. this thing I'm sure will fit the NA-GH3

But you get amazing 200mbps at 1080p or 100mbps at 4K without external recorder

I have an Ninja2 with the NA-NINJA2 housing - so this for me - is getting better and better

To get 10bit 4:2:2 - it will only go to external recorder - so no recording on camera at the same time - lets hope they haven't forgotten about power saving issues (and it going to sleep while not recording!!)
