Nikonos III 15mm lens (seeking forgotten knowledge )

Featured Replies

Forgive me if this is a dumb question, but how does it all seal up?

Is there glass in the nauticam adaptor (I can't tell from the pictures 😁)? So the camera is in the housing as usual, but with no lens attached, then the adaptor is fitted as a normal port would be and the lens just connects on the wet side by bayonet?

Or is there no glass in the adaptor, but a seal between lens and adaptor?

(Not planning on getting anything like this but just curious)

Thanks!

The lens has a rather significant o-ring which seals to the adapter.

Ah, thanks!

Think I'd probably be a bit nervous to put that on an expensive body..... although I guess the normal ports are just an o-ring too, but less vintage

Cheers

I've gotten in a couple of dives with the 12mm fisheye on an ASPC camera. Perspective is nice but definitely not all that sharp, although uniform across the FOV. Feels like a 20mm rectilinear equivalent on the smaller sensor.

Did some pool testing today, at f3.5 and infinity focus everything from a meter out is basically in focus as it'll get. I might be in the situation of needing to get the camera moved closer to the lens.

Well I made the big jump to an A7RIII with the 12mm, one dive in ambient light only. I think I may have camera position within the housing issues. Both lenses don't seem to focus particularly sharp or on infinity. Both will focus sharp but very close on land.

Any thoughts from the brain trust?

Both lenses? I know at least the Nikonos lenses don't reach focus in air. I would assume the S&S lens would be similar.

Both can focus very close in air on both FF and ASPC.

I haven't tried the 15mm underwater on FF, focus was kind of soft on ASP-C. I'll try it on FF tomorrow.

Hello, the 12mm sea and the 15mm nikonos do not focus out of the water, but if you close the diaphragm too much you can get a slight focus just a few cm from the lens, in the water try to use closed diaphragms f8, f11 or more, distance 1m if it still does not focus, you will have to slightly modify the camera shoe so that it advances more or less 0.5mm and go testing... in the water, obviously...

It was difficult for me to do many tests with errors until I got a good focus, especially with the 12mm it is easier to focus...

Did you focus on infinity for the in water tests?

I shot the 15mm yesterday UW and using the focus guides everything should have been in focus but all the images were very soft.

what do you mean by using the focus guides - are you using focus peaking?

The guides on the lens itself. I'm not finding peaking to be particularly accurate unfortunately.

This is what I was trying to do.

I just shot some tests in my bathtub and the focus marks do align with the focal distance at least at shorter distance. However what I'm seeing is that the lens itself just isn't very sharp and gets worse wide open. They aren't particularly expensive so I may just buy another and see.

I'll dry things off and swap on the Sea&Sea 12mm to compare.

Update:

The 12mm is significantly sharper. Also focus peaking at least at close range is all but useless.

I think it's likely my 15mm has some issues and I'll try to find another since I like it's perspective for wrecks. The 12mm in Super35/ASP-C is pretty similar although obviously a little distorted.
