Hi from California

April 3Apr 3

Hi everyone, my name is Anton, I'm based in the Santa Cruz area of California. I've been a sometimes lurker on here for quite a while now and even made an account a few years ago but never got around to posting. I do a lot of freshwater photography around the state and elsewhere, although I do occasionally venture into marine environments as well. Looking forward to chatting with you all more.

The Ocean Still Has Stories to Tell
The Ocean Still Has Stories to Tell

RichN · September 29Sep 29

I have spent a lot of years looking through a viewfinder, both above and below the surface. Photography has always been about capturing something that would otherwise pass — a person, a place, a fraction of a second that would be gone if we did not make the effort to preserve it. Sometimes the result is artistic, sometimes documentary, sometimes neither, and sometimes a little of both. But some of the moments that have stayed with me the most are the ones when I’ve stopped thinking about the ph

Over 50 and still diving? (Go on, admit it....)
Over 50 and still diving? (Go on, admit it....)
TimG · October 31, 2025Oct 31

On a recent dive trip I met someone who is writing a dissertation on people who are 50+ and diving. If you are interested in contributing, the following is a link to a simple questionnaire which takes about 5 minutes to complete. I've become paranoid about online scams, phishing etc. But this looks fine and I know the author - and the information gathered is pretty innocuous. https://forms.cloud.microsoft/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=e3VPRDDLUkaTvMqNbR74E5Cna1DJ6d1KvM2oRz5_gAdUM0Y3UEpYTkZERDJON

LOFIC: the 17 stops claimed by the Osmo Pocket 4P and the future of sensors

Davide DB · August 22Aug 22

There has been discussion recently about the new DJI Osmo Pocket 4P. DJI claims up to 17 stops of dynamic range on its new 1-inch sensor, and comparisons with cinema cameras like the ARRI Alexa quickly surfaced online. Looking at the numbers, it might seem plausible, but visually the situation is different. Waveform plot for the DJI OSMO Pocket 4P 20mm wide D-Log2 ISO1600. Image credit: CineD Spoiler: no, it is not a micro Alexa. PetaPixel confirmed after testing it that LOFIC improves both

Cozumel Officials Clarify Customs Treatment of Dive Computers and Underwater Camera Housings

RichN · September 21Sep 21

Underwater camera housings traveling with their corresponding cameras are to be treated as photographic accessories, while dive computers are to be classified as sporting equipment, according to Cozumel tourism officials following meetings with Mexican Customs. Broader questions about strobes, ports, wet lenses and whether the interpretation applies throughout Mexico remain unresolved.
