Android video capture apps through divevolk housing and recommend settings ?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have been playing around with my Samsung s24U and a divevolk housing these last few weeks to see what kind of footage I can get. By default I get washed out colours and I'm getting lost in the ocean of options available :

People usually recommend the black magic app, although it seems more relevant for iPhones. It can't shoot in log and does not have access to all colos spaces.

The standard Samsung app does offer log, but does not allow to switch off AI sharpening or separate shutter lock from ISO.

I have been recommended to play around Motioncam pro, that shoots raw. This will require more post processing, and I have not found any feedback from divers.

And in all those apps, tons of settings to play around with.

Has anyone managed to get some quality video footage with an android phone ? I'd love to hear from you.

Hi @Radar

Great post and definitely very interesting. Where are you shooting? It would be helpful to see a screensnap or a small video clip to be able to see what's happening.

I use an iPhone 13 Pro Max when I've used either my Sealife Sport Diver or DiveVolk Housing and have always been happy with my underwater images and video footage (you can see some footage I've made on my Ocean Visions Photography page on Tik Tok). I've been using DiveVolk weekly or more during the past month here in the UK and have not had a problem with my underwater footage. I've just been using my standard Apple settings. I've heard that UWACAM has been designed specifically for DiveVolk cases, have you tried it?

Also have you reached out to Matthias Lebo at all? He's been using DiveVolk since they started and is an expert in Underwater Videography. He should be able to help you more.

Good luck with the journey and look forward to seeing your footage and hearing how you get on.

Maria

The bad new is that I have an android phone : Uwacam is not compatible with these and some of the juicy features in black magic aren't available either. I have not found anyone with a successful experience on this platform, all divevolk users have iPhones it seems 😂

I follow Matthias but his only android reference was a teaser with a Samsung phone he was loanedw could not give recommendations or settings.

I would like to avoid switching to iOS or reverting back to an action cam 🫣

Latest attempts were in Mexico (Socorro) and in french lakes. I am no in the Mediterranean to try some more settings.

Hi again @Radar,

Have you tried MotionCamApp at all? @Nando Diver gave a great review on a previous posting back in January together with a sample video taken with it which is on You Tube. Thanks Nando Diver 🙏

If we see your images then we can give you more pointers as to how to help.

Hope this helps and good luck with the testing!

Actually ive being following the Motioncam discord group, ive made some request to developers like add Presets

The "big feature of motioncam" is to record to Raw bypassing all the manufacturer implementation.

At the moment i would approach with caution while using MotionCam for underwater, unless your android smartphone support all cameras sizes without frames drop or overheating out of the box, because due the fragmentation of android hardware some smartphone need to unlock the bootloader.

The interface of motioncam is also not friendly at all for underwater.

Since im more iPhone user, my latest experimental was with UWACAM, really nice app specifically made for underwater use, supporting in video Prores422 HQ up to 240FPS, color space P3-D65, apple log, rec2020 and LUTs

In pictures it support Apple ProRAW up to 16BIT
