Trip Report Thailand Koh Tao & Samui

Featured Replies

Doing a week family trip Mid -June 2026 to Thailand

Itinerary

Lisbon - Bangkok - Koh Samui ( 4 nights)

Koh Samui Ferry to Koh Tao (6 nights)

Return to Bangkok (5 Nights)

Ive booked accommodation at Asava Dive Resort for 3/4 days Diving in Koh Tao

They dive 2x morning (up to 30m) and 2x afternoon (up to 18m) trying to go different diving spots everytime

Don't go with many expectations, but i think i won't be disappointment,

Sail rock or trident wreck seems to be the place to go for experienced divers...

5 nights in Bangkok? 😳

Only been once -I though the place was mental. Quite fun for a few days but I wouldn't want to live there.

I suspect Koh Tao will be a bit touristy but better than Koh Samui. I reckon you'll have a decent time. We went to the Similans in December and although we didn't see any pelagics it was great in many other ways and the food is of course amazing.

@Mike Saunders You might be right, 5 days in bangkok seems excessive.

But Ive booked for different days, food tour, cycling tour, boat tour, and we staying in chinatown.

On friday i might go to Amphawa floating market & Maeklong railway market outside bangkok

As someone who lived in Bangkok for a few years, you can definitely have fun in a family-friendy way as long as you avoid Nana Plaza, Soi Cowboy, and Patpong 1+2 at night.

The city is very diverse - the people are friendly (as long as you are respectful of their culture), and food is excellent.

Koh Tao has the better diving, but Koh Samui has the better resorts, etc. Ironically, some of the better diving available from Koh Samui is taking the boat to Koh Tao.

One way to get away from the crowds in Koh Samui is to rent out the entire boat and guide. You'll be able to dive your schedule, get away from any others divers, etc. This sounds expensive (and it can be), but if you ask the dive shops for a private boat and guide you might find a deal (although June is starting to become more popular with Europeans traveling to Thailand.
