I'm brand new to YT and just looked at a video I put up there. When I view it on YT, it's crappy. When I view the file on my laptop, it looks fine. Can anyone tell me what I've done wrong? I went to YT because I just wanted an easy place to pop videos to share with friends/family, but I'd like them to look good! Thanks

Hi Kristin. Your clips look better than your buddy’s. My take is that you benefit from being closer to your subject and that one sequence of the two fish looks to have some artificial light, both of which are very helpful. Is most of the video straight out of camera without grading and processing? That could be part of it, with differences in what each camera puts out in terms of contrast and color balance. Fun stuff though!

You Tube does auto bit rate and sizing it seems, On my big screen the video is often obviously stretched but looks a lot better on a smaller screen.

The biggest thing is it will degrade the quality if the connection is not great. I just watched at home on a decent connection on my big screen and your footage looks pretty good. Smaller screens need a lower bitrate to look good.

The footage under the overhang looks a bit familiar - quite like a shot I got from the Labyrinth divesite a few years back now.

As Chris wrote, YouTube adapter the bitrate based on your connection and preferences.

On the phone and on desktop you can change that ar various degrees. On the phone, by default without wifi it uses a low resolution. You can change it on the fly or on the app preferences but basically you have low/high while on desktop you can choose resolution. Sometimes the auto function doesn't work so you have to force the correct resolution.

I've been a Vimeo Plusmember since 2007 and the service has gotten much worse over the years. The company that owns it changed many times, and they've had several legal fights with copyright owners.

In recent years, they've completely given up on being a choice instead of YouTube. They've focused on giving services to people who use it for work. The last big problem happened a few months ago. Because of copyrightrproblems, it seems they failed complying with EU privacy and copyright rules, they completely separated users in many European countries from the rest of the world. Now, I can't see what my friends around the world are doing anymore. They did this by lying to users and without telling them. Even though I pay 100 dollars a year, when I asked why, they told me they aren't allowed to tell me. Forget them!

It's shameful. And it's done badly, very badly. Think about it: in the app, I still get messages about video uploads from people I follow, but I can't watch them neitther Incan ses their profiles, and the search doesn't work. Darn them! 100 dollars a year.

At the end of the year, I won't pay for it again because of this.

That IS terrible. Shame on Vimeo.

Indeed. The problem with Vimeo is mainly their search engine has been disabled in Europe. You can still access all the features if you have a VPN pointing to the US or it seems to work if you have a direct link to the video. The base link for the search engine outside Europe is vimeo.com/watch with all the things we used to have but in Europe you land at the root of your own page and that's all.

To quote them about that change:

Q: What specific features are impacted by these changes?

A: Vimeo no longer organizes or promotes individual user-uploaded videos on Vimeo.com in the EU or UK. As a result, certain features available in our Free plans are no longer available on Vimeo.com in the EU and UK:

Searching Vimeo is now limited to video content within your own Video Library.

Channels, Groups, Categories, and other curated video collections, including Staff Picks, are no longer accessible.

My Feed is no longer accessible.

For Hire is no longer accessible.

Although some features are no longer accessible in these regions, you continue to retain full ownership and control of your content. You can still share and embed videos on your websites and social networks.

I must say that I could not care less about what the European Film Academy is offering on vimeo especially in regards to underwater video filmmaking. There is simply nothing.

Yes buy I couldn't care less while I pay 100 USD per year for a service. I pay the same as an American member. Moreover they didn't communicate anything before the switch. I received some vague update announcement but nothing explicit. Thousand of customers discovered it later by themselves. Imagine that if I use Vimeo for my work, I cannot see most of my overseas customers profiles. Unbelievable.

So IMHO stay away from them

I am also a vimeo plus member for probably 10 years. At the moment, the real dealbreaker for me to leave Vimeo would be the inclusiion of ads which I found super annoying on Youtube.

Yes the ad free experience is a plus, but until years ago I browsed Vimeo finding video and interesting content, something like YT, now I use it mostly to share my work with my buddies on our projects. They can even download the original file while on YT you can't.

Before the "switch" I could upload 5GB per week and during the years I uploaded tons of video.

Now they changed policy: they removed the 5GB weekly limit and added a global 260GB limit. But they didn't reset the counter. I fiound myself half full but I know of users that found themselves immediately without space so basically forced to delete a lot of material, upgrade or leave.

IDK if I will renew it. In the meantimecopied all my public videos on YT.

Thanks everyone for your input. So many things are bullshit now...am I just getting old or are things truly sucking more?

Seems it's a YT issue, so ok. I wasn't talking so much about the quality of the footage, it's all action cam so it is what it is, but the playback looking crapola. I'll see if I can figure anything out to make it better. Appreciate the help!

It's not you, Kristin. It's a broader trend, sometimes called enshittification.

One of the downsides of our ultra-connected world is how human interaction has been stripped of its substance.

This forum format we're exchanging on is a blast from the past — a time capsule for us online old-timers, boogieing like it's 2005 again.
It's also an island of genuine content sharing and discussion, the kind that's becoming increasingly rare online

You are absolutly right.

On an other forum... I tried to make some interesting travel reports. Give a lot of (i hope) usefull information.
Some guys didn't appreciate that... to many informations.. and for some they are a lot of jealousy.
After near 10 years to give a lot and received a many thanks of some readers I have enough from this negativ people. That is a part of the reasons why i'm here now

It is so difficult these days to find reliable information. Here I have the impression that there are friendly people who try to help and give good information
Thanks to all
