Wondering if anyone has used an EMWL with a focusing unit which was not intended for their camera brand?

Following -- I used the #3 unit as recommended by Nauticam for use on cropped sensor (D500) with the nikon 60mm and  a plus 4 diopter. This set up is not great as having the diopter means no standard 60mm when the emwl is removed.

 

Having bought a D850 recently I was keen to try the EMWL with the nikon 105mm - the recommended focus unit is #1 - I have done one dive using the #3 unit and I did not notice much difference but in fairness have only tried once and will need to get into lightroom to compare. Will take a look tonight. I have been using the 100 degree optic.

 

Anyone wanting to swap a unit 3 for a unit 1 I might be interested!

I've already told Andrew this, but others might be interested. A friend of mine used the Canon 100mm focusing unit with the Sony 90mm with the 130 and 100 objectives with no apparent issues. 

 

I suspect that all the focusing units might work with all the listed lenses with the only difference being that if you're using a focusing unit designed for a longer macro you'll get a slightly wider FOV and vice versa. There is also the possibility of vignetting when going wider, but we won't know for sure until it has been tested. 

 

I have been interested in trying the Nikon 105mm focusing unit with my Sony 90mm to see if it increases the FOV but haven't had the opportunity so far. 

 

John's setup (90mm focusing unit with 105mm lens) should provide a slightly narrower FOV.

So it means that a Sony or Canon setup could work on a M43 system?

I'm not sure I understand your question either. But Nauticam lists two M43 macro lenses as being compatible with the EMWL: the Olympus 60mm with focusing unit #1 and the Panasonic 45mm with focusing unit #3. What I'm saying is that I suspect you might be able to use any of the 3 focusing units with those macro lenses and get acceptable results, with the only differences being slight variations in FOV.

I'd like to try it on my GH5/ Leica 45mm to understand the video potential but everyone I know has the Canon or Sony version so I've never arranged a test.

I understand there is a degree of interchangeability between models. This means I can pester the lucky owners with a test request 😇

 

Interested to hear how it works out for you Davide. I just bought a 130 objective but have yet to purchase a focusing unit. If the Nikon or Canon focusing unit produce a wider FOV without the expense of vignetting, than I would probably opt for the wider options. 

No problem, @Davide DB. That makes sense. Yes, I think it would be worth testing with any focusing unit you can get your hands on. But I'll note that the Sony unit (#3) is the recommend one for the Leica 45mm, so it sounds like you might have the opportunity to test the recommended setup.

Hi @Davide DB did you eventually get to try the setup with different focusing units? I am also wondering whether my zcam + 45mm would work with i.e. focus unit 1.

I did test it with focus unit 2 and didn't notice any vignetting, but focus unit 1 is quite a bit longer, so I wonder what that would do to image quality and vignetting.

Hi Isaac, did you by any chance learn more about this?

From what I understand, you suggest that using i.e. the focus unit #1 (96mm length) might work with a panasonic 45mm on m4/3 sensor, but would provide a slightly larger FOV and possible vignetting? I'm trying to wrap my head around the optics and how that larger FOV might occur.

No, because the person who was supposed to lend me the lens sold it in the meantime, and I didn't get a chance to try it. Isaac hypothesized that they probably all work, but you'll get different FOVs. It would be great to know for sure.

@Hilmar While testing various configurations of my EMWL setup, I discovered that increasing the distance between the focus unit and objective increased the field of view but also started to cause vignetting at some point. My hypothesis is that the different focus units might be identical other than the length at the front, with unit 1 being longest to account for the narrower FOV of the 105mm lenses and unit 3 being shortest to account for the wider FOV of 90mm lenses (and unit 2 in between for 100mm lenses). I believe your 45mm lens will work with all of the focus units. I think unit 1 would provide the widest FOV, though I cannot say for sure whether or not there would be a small amount of vignetting without trying that exact combination.

@Isaac Szabo Valuable insight, makes sense! I'm going to keep my eyes open for a good deal, regardless of the type of focus unit. I might switch to another brand of lenses in the future anyway. It's interesting to learn more about the lens optics in a practical sense. On paper it looks as if there is no way you should even try and use a different focusing unit, but in practice it might not be a huge deal, fascinating!
