Red Sea liveaboard: 2 spaces available for October trip
Make sure Mrs P doesn't get to hear about this - I got a reserve spot on Alex's boat this autumn and she's not impressed that they can't fit her on! A good itinerary that one, should be a great trip for someone

Cheers for the reply - but you did have me a little confused with the bigger stuff! Mike

Bali24 Dive trip and thoughts
A nice variety of shots. Whereabouts did you dive? I've done 2 trips to Tualmben the last 2 years, and will return 2025/26 so am happy with that area. I snorkelled Menjangen this year and will dive there next year, but I'm guessing you were further south - Nusa Penida maybe? Please can you let me know who you dived with (if you were happy with them!) so I can start looking around for the future cheers Mike

Which lens for a Canon EOS 5D?
Are you currently on full frame or crop? If you're on APS-C with a 60mm then the full frame equivalent for canon would be one of their 100mm macros. If you're currently putting the Nikon 60mm on a full frame, then the only one I can think of is the Sigma 70mm macro but I've never seen any report of it being used underwater

Full Frame Bubble Burst
I wasn't going to reply but as it seems to be getting personal... 1. I couldn't care less about easy likes. Never have, never will. 2. I have pointed out benefits in areas you don't like to shoot - but you are so arrogant you don't want to hear it. 3. Where am I saying its the artistic merit that counts? Or are you just talking yet more rubbish? 4. I see the photos you publish, and to be fair, they don't inspire me. De-saturated sharks that have clearly been over processed do not give me any viewing pleasure and look false You really are the most arrogant, unpleasant argumentative bore I have ever had to deal with on wetpixel / waterpixels. I've no doubt your ego will make you reply to this- crack on, I'm out trying to deal with you

Full Frame Bubble Burst
Last bit of advice - You clearly want to establish yourself as a knowledgeable person with respect to underwater photography. You are trying on a regular basis to use science to back up your theories. Show us beautiful photos instead. You really, really, need to look and think about how you came across on the internet if you want an audience to respect your thoughts. Just once in a while, try listening to and understanding other peoples opinions and experiences - chances are you will learn something yourself. Look at both sides of a debate without being confrontational, you're sounding like a football fan who cannot see past his own team. The title here is Full Frame bubble Burst. It hasn't, and it likely never will. Maybe you don't feel the need to use it, and that's great- people get fantastic shots with compact cameras - but to not consider a huge portion of the genre and still try and defend your point really doesn't do you any favours. On that point, I think I'm done with this thread, Mike

Full Frame Bubble Burst
Massimo, Once again you're trying to use selective points to justify your sensationalism. I use the A1 with WWL-1, EMWL and SMC. AF is better than the D500 for all 3 scenarios, albeit the closest run in for the wide angle. It doesn't matter how much resolution you have if your shot is not in focus. Ansel Adams was spot on in regards of that point. Just to dismiss FF and to keep trying to argue the point to support the thread title is plain silly and when the overall situation is taken into consideration - wildly inaccurate

Full Frame Bubble Burst
Super macro isn't niche, and certainly not 5 grand. EMWL, undoubtedly so, Like I said above, you're trying to be sensationalist but unfortunately only talking about a select area of the genre doesn't cut it in the real world. Its not a sign of weakness to acknowledge other peoples opinions and realise there may be more to the discussion than the initial headline
-
Full Frame Bubble Burst
What about all the significant improvements with regards to super macro and using the EMWL? AF is far superior,I used to need to lock focus and rock the camera with my SMC-1 on the D500, where I get a superb hit rate just simply using AF now on the A1. Likewise there are very well noted AF issues with the EMWL that are not present on the A1. It seems more than a little hasty to try and go for a sensational headline when you're not considering both sides of the argument for a huge portion of underwater shooting

Full Frame Bubble Burst
If you're happy then great. There is an undeniable cost issue that is a personal matter as to whether its worth it for the individual. However, there are enough real world reviews with open water examples by top underwater shooters around to visibly display that there is significant improvements with the latest kit. I really don't think the likes of Alex Mustard would choose to use sub-standard kit. I don't expect for one moment you to alter your opinion on this - I think there are enough posts here to know you will argue your point to the death - but the fact of the matter is full frame mirrorless is better than previous kit, be it D500, D850 or earlier mirrorless incarnations. The only deciding factor really for amateurs in the finances
-
Full Frame Bubble Burst
I have an A1 and think its fantastic - as do a lot of other people. Doing super macro is far easier than with my old D500 with the noticeable improvements in the AF capabilities The files are easier to work with. There are numerous reported issues using the EMWL on DSLRs with regards to the focussing - not on the A1. Size wise there is very little in it. Yes, there is a real gap for a true reasonably priced fisheye, but I can adapt my old dogma 15mm if I want, and the WWL-1 covers the rest of the area I need. If I had more money I could go with further water contact optics. The D500 was great, and I wouldn't cry if I had to go back to it again, but the A1 is just superior in the field. Can't argue with the finances side of things either. Now, if you think photography is studying test graphs, examining the extreme corners of frames ad infinitum and shooting pool walls, then good for you, but I'm a big fan of seeing real world results, and maybe just ask yourself why the majority of top level pro's who do this thing to put food in the table use full frame.

Bali Mandarinfish question
Who did you dive with Edwin? I'm back there for 4 nights next year, and may consider giving up one sunset to see the Mandarins!

Bali Mandarinfish question
I didn't do any diving there in the end, we decided to treat it to a short break both me and Mrs P cold enjoy. I spoke to DiveConcepts a couple of times and I was impressed with their honesty - they gave me about a 30% chance of seeing the Mandarins, is I decided to have fun in other ways. Lovely area. Mrs P doesn't dive any more but loves snorkelling, so we did a day at Menjangen, and I must say I was really impressed with the conditions of the reefs we went to - huge coral coverage, and I will be diving them next year when we go back. really hope if that proposed new road to Gilimanuk doesn't being in too m any day trippers because in their current state the reefs were beautiful at Menjangen.

Tulamben, Bali
Thanks for the comments folk Mike

Tulamben, Bali
Thanks, I really like this one myself - once I saw the review underwater I stayed with him quite a while Cheers Chris, yes the leaf fish was snooted from the rear of the fish Thanks Time, I dropped lucky with him - 3 yawns then we left him to it Thanks Luko, and yes with Ajiex. Superb guide as he's quick to grasp what you want to do with lighting etc. He was a little obsessed with getting me to do some colour abstract stuff like this which isn't really my thing but works now and again Mike

SLR to Mirrorless - Macro or WA first?
I went from a D500 to a Sony A1. You will be aware of the potential IQ differences (although if you only post on the web, you're unlikely to notice a huge difference) so we can skip that. Shooting wise I don't see a massive difference with wide angle. If anything, the D500 is easier as the viewfinder has more scope shooting with the dynamic range. However, once it comes to macro, its another story. Being able to look for tiny critters, stay imposition, then review the shots and make strobe adjustments without moving and losing the critter is invaluable. In your situation I'd only got Sony full frame for macro and once you're happy with that consider WA Mike

Bubble in WWL-C Wet Lens?
Did you move the strobes between shots?

Bali Mandarinfish question
Cheers Grm, I'm only there 3 days and will get plenty of diving in around tulamben and its neighbouring sites, so I'm going to give the mandarin dives a miss. Mrs P has hinted maybe I should do a couple of dives around Menjangen instead, and its a foolish man who disobeys his wife! There is a great site about 10 minutes from Shaun that I was planning on going to again, but if they are in 2m here I could se potential for an EMWL shot - great info, thanks Mike

Bali Mandarinfish question
Thanks for the replies everyone. The dive centre have come back with an estimate of a 30% success rate so I think I'll just look at going and enjoying the area as a regular tourist! cheers Mike

Bali Mandarinfish question
Hi everyone, In a few weeks I'll be in Bali, doing lots of diving around the Tulamben area. I'm sorted in that area, diving with Ajax Dharma. However, we will also have 3 nights in the Permuteran / Menjangen area, where the internet informs me there are mandarinfish sites. However, when I contacted one of the dive centres that advertises that specific dive they replied that they don't do it much due to a 'low chance' of seeing the mandarins. I'm awaiting further clarification, but wondered if anyone on here had any more experience of the area thanks Mike

SUPE D-PRO Strobe test
Nice concise review, thanks for doing this Mike

Blue Heron Bridge
I think I need to give you a shout next time I'm over there! Done 2 dives at that location and couldn't work out what all the fuss was about but that's a great collection of critters. In particular I love the striated frogfish, once work Mike

First time with EMWL
Ok, North should be good for you then, a few wrecks plus probably some sites at Ras Mohammed, and the Straits of Tiran plus a couple of local reefs. Don't be tempted to spend too long in Cairo, once you've seen the pyramids you're pretty much done and there are far nicer areas to go to. Air temps will be up in the low 80's probably with water being high 70's. I have a 5mm wetsuit, no hood or gloves and have never been cold in the water. There was a diver from Sacramento this year just in a t-shirt. Sounds lovely but there is a but, in that it can get windy that time of year so there is a chance of getting cold as soon as you get out of the water. Best bit of advice I'll probably ever give on these boards is get straight out of the water, put your camera down, and there will likely be showers on either side of the boat. Go straight into them with a spare pair of dry shorts, shower and dry off before anything else with your gear. You can thank me later! If you're going out of Hurghada a much nicer place to stay is El Gouna which is only 20 mins north of the airport. Give me a shout when you have some specifics Mike

First time with EMWL
thanks Chip, You are unlikely to get big shoals during November, they are normally early summer time. Are you going to be land based or Liveaboard? A lot of the Northern Liveaboard routes include a fair bit of wreck diving - great if that's your thing, but not my preference. For the North I prefer the reefs where there will still be small to mid-sized subjects to go for. No muck style diving, but plenty of gobies, blennies shrimp, a few nudis etc on the small side, going up to blue spot rays, Napoleon's, etc as the largest species. If you can get to Dolphin House at sha'ab el erg there is a resident dolphin population there, but 50/50 on if they want to play. If you were to consider the southern Red Sea you've got 2 main routes- Brothers, Daedalus and Elphonstone, that can be done from Hurghada or Port Ghalib, or even further south for St Johns type routes. The Brothers Daedalus Elphinstone itinerary has excellent chances of shark sightings, I hadOceanic white-tips, hammer and a thresher, but they kept their distance from me-others has the oceanic up close and personal. Good chances for turtles and the rest of the regular Red Sea residents. Going further south has more beautiful coral. Only available from Port Ghalib. let me know what you fancy most and I'll make a recommendation Mike
