Has anyone had any experience with this monitor. I am reluctant to believe any of the Youtube people.

I wrote Kraken and Weefine about their 7" monitors. No replies from them 😶

 

I don't understand why all these new monitors (also SUPE) are depth rated to 80m. Once it was 100m. This breaks the deal for me.

Another strange spec is their weight underwater: Kraken writes 2140g on land/560g underwater for both models 5.5" and 7". Very strange indeed and it's a lot.

Anyway their lights are good.

I ordered the 5.5 ultra bright and waiting on delivery. I have noticed most manufacturers will set a test depth for warrant and safety reasons. I had a TG-5 which is supposed to be good to 45ft. Took it to 100ft by accident, no water ingress.

Will give update as soon as I can test.

I was interested in their 7" monitor which is a behemoth so I asked them some info. Here their reply:

The HDMI cable that is included is quite flexible but we are working on a 90 degree cable. It is not ready yet, however.

 

The 80m depth rating is because of the large pane of glass over the screen on the monitor. To ensure the integrity of the monitor, we only rate it down to 80m. It may be able to go deeper, but we cannot insure it for deeper and do not recommend taking it below 80m.

 

 

Depth rating and hdmi cable position are huge deal breakers for me.

The 5.5" has a more ergonomic hdmi position but same weird depth rating.

The only meaningful review is this but I guess you saw I already. If you are still alive, at the end, he speaks about a couple of weird things on the function buttons that could be solved via fw upgrade but who knows 🤷 

 

 

FYI - I ran into a new user of the 5.5” Kraken monitor yesterday.  He said he likes it overall.  The brightness is terrific, even in a shallow sunny dive.  He also stressed it is quite negative due to the very compact design.  He was adding more buoyancy to compensate.  The battery life was good.

 

The only concern he expressed was regarding their included video ribbon cable.  The thin design can cause it to flicker if the cable is moved.  He is working through a better HDMI cable solution for a more solid video connection.  Other than that he has been very happy thus far.

Yes, from camera body to the housing bulkhead they chose the same cables used for fpv drones.

The good: is cheap and easily available everywhere.

The bad: fragile. Especially in the part where the connectors are crimped to the ribbon.

Tried in a pool, bright sun. Looks like it will workfor my needs. I thought about a 7 inch, but glad I got the 5 inch. Even the 5 inch is large for thew rig.

Is it very heavy? How about cable routing?

My Nauticam GH5 has the worst hdmi input position.

While diving with Reef Photo at the Blue Heron Bridge recently using a rental GH6, I discovered that there isn't really enough room between the camera and a Nauticam housing for the internal HDMI cable.  I had to shave some of the rubber off the connector to get it to close.  I made sure that Reef Photo knew about it, so they could talk with Nauticam about it.  I am not sure if there might a "low profile" connector or something that might help, but it will probably also be an issue with the GH7 since it uses the same housing.

Good to know! Were you using an original Nauticam cable? No problem on my GH5 housing but I couldn't find a third part cable compatible because the space is really tight!

 

BTW I was referring about the external bulkhead position. The combination of its position and straight monitor connector gives me just one option to mount it and not the best one. I had to completely change my arms configuration and i'm not satisfied.

Yes, it was the original cable that came with my GH5 housing when I bought that, and the GH6 is even tighter.

Hello - I have followed this forum for a few years, and became a member about a year ago but had never posted an intro. I am replying to the forum related to the Kraken 5.5" monitor which I have used for about a year.

I am a novice underwater photographer. My current gear includes Sony A1 camera/Nauticam housing/Sea and Sea YSD-3ii strobes, kraken 8000 lights, and UW technics flash trigger, a kraken 5.5" and mosty the WACP1 wet lens (with 28-60 mm sony lens).

I found the Kraken 5.5" monitor to be easier to use than the Atomos Ninja in housing (the Atomos does record - Kraken doesn't, and the atomos in housing is far less negatively buoyant in water whilst the Kraken required I add buoyancy). I find some of the functionailty of the Ninja to be challenging in the housing though and some not available when in housing. By contrast the controllers on the Kraken are easier for me to use underwater and for my needs, the functionality of the kraken monitor outweighed the travel weight, buoyancy challenge, and lack of recording.

I fully agree with the others who commented on the ribbon HDMi controller. Its very frail and caused flickering, required that I downregulate the quality of the HDMI output from my camera and sometimes just didnt transmit signal at all. I switched to this :

I purchased on AMAZON. There are right and left right angle versions - I can get both to work with Sony A1 in Nauticam NA-A1. I did require Kraken to provide me with a modified bulkhead so I could use this cable. Prior to my using that Kraken sent me a right angle HDMI cable for inside the housing with the modified bulkhead to the external HDMI cable and Nauticam has an option. But these are more expensive, more bulky, less flexible. For me this inexpensive HDMI cable inside the housing was a game changer and I went from being very frustrated to enjoying the monitor. Also, looking at Amazon it appears that there are other versions of this cable that I purchased over a year ago that may have replaced it or are alternatives.

Regarding the HDMI output, on my camera at least, if switched to "AUTO" it worked just fine (it needed to be at 1080p when I was using the annoying ribbon cable).

You have a lot of space inside. In my GH5 I have the original Nauticam (maybe 15cm) and it's nearly too long.

Could you post the Amazon Link? From Italy I can't find it.

They have them made to specs in literally milimeter increments for each housing... that's why...

Apologies i hadnt considered the cable length - I think thought that this is because the cable is so thin and flexible that I was able to easily fold it in the housing without issue. I cant speak to the other housings, and i dont know if the same cable or style exists in shorter lengths however a cursory online look at B&H showed other 8" thin HDMI cables as well. I can say that this this cable at 1 foot was far more manageable in the housing than the ~15 cm cable that was provided due to flexibility.

Personnally, I've been using DIY FPV HDMI cables. It's cheap, compact, easily replaceable available on Aliexpress, Amazon. You just need to properly insulate the PCB for the HDMI plugs. No soldering required. I've been using that on my GH5s and Z8 for years without issues.

Those ribbon cables are also present inside some UW monitors like the Weefine WED-5 and WED-7 and also Gopro housings from Hugyfot.

How do you insulate it?

I simply use basic electric tape most of the time (laziness) but you can also use heat shrink tube or insulating spray (best option since this is what people use in the FPV drone world). It's possible that PCBs are already insulated but I haven't checked and there are a few manufacturers with slightly different PCBs.

Does anyone have the V2 version of this monitor?

There are no manuals online, and from the photos, I can't tell if it's possible to mount the 1" ball both on the top and the bottom.

Yes, the mounting screw and tabs are on the top and bottom. I just bought mine a few weeks ago. Waiting on my ribbon cables to suit my setup before getting it underwater.
