Interesting that the new a1 will use the a9III body.  I do like the a7rV flippy screen design will be included for landscape usage.

The new 28-70 looks very interesting for portrait work, especially the lighter weight.

Will either of these specifically help in uw work?  Possibly the new focus capabilities on the a1 II could be a win, but at a high cost.  This new body + a Nauticam housing comes in at around $12,500, plus tax.

Who knows.
Current AFs are all AI-based or more appropriately, with machine learning technologies.
Perhaps the new camera will have a more powerful AI chip and new data with which it has been trained.
I don't know if this is already the case now, but ideally it would be possible to update the data that the algorithm has been trained with through a simple FW update.

Rather not. I can't imagine that improvements in AF will help UW. What we need are good sensors and reliable AF - I doubt that anything beyon A7IV and RV will really help making better pics.

Video might be something different....

IF they could squeeze in a realtime AF tracking in video WITH visible tracking point now THAT would be a game changer... other than that we can only ask Santa to bring additional fish animal AF 😂... For photo they COULD bring AF bracketing (for macrophotography). Other than that I am happy with what it has. The HDR video I am able to get out of this gen through custom WB - SLog3 - HLG interpretation on Shinobi with waveform controlled overexposure - PQ no LUT conversion and HLG export in FCPX ... it's pretty awesome.

The included focus bracketing in the last deploy of software for the A7 IV - I'm quite sure the same will be done for the A1 and A1 II

$12,500! I didn't get that for my left kidney.

Clearly this is all relative to how much you are willing to spend on a camera and housing. I am sure many think that those of use with A1 cameras and housings are crazy for having spent $9800.00 to $11000.00 depending on housing.

The $1000.00 increase +/- for the A1 II V A1 is steep but the $3400.00 Canon R5 has increased by $900.00 for R5 II which also has the same sensor and AF that now equaling the A1. So the percentage of increase for the Canon R5 to R5 II is actually greater by about 10% than for the Sony A1 to A1 II. It is all relative and will not change anytime soon.

urrgghh ... I don't like the movie/photo switch and don't like this part from Nauticam A9III manual :

* lift up the Still/Movie/S&Q lever as
well as the Focus lever and make
sure both lever control on housing are
aligned with camera controls before
installing the camera into housing

slide the camera tray back into the
housing along the tray rail

with focus switch you at least see visually where the control bracket drop but the movie switch is on the other side and so it's not visible...
