Hi, thought I would start a topic for the little Action 4.

Been reading through the other posts about the Gopro's and Insta's.

 

Got the AOI Glass Dome port coming for it so will add info about it as I get it into the water.

The Action 4 on super wide mode has way too much distortion when used underwater.

 

To start off here is a little clip I took on a shallow dirty dive, WB set to 5500k and no filter.

Had it on Horizon Steady or Level as some call it, so the image stays level, seems to work pretty good.

Quite surprised how much I can push the CC, guess that 10 bit helps.

Great, thank you Wags, this a very nice example of what the camera is capable of doing with a little CC, impressive and more balanced than previous clips I'd seen, though there is a green hue.
Is the water green in your locale? (it would seem so based on the surface shot)

 

I'm not sure this would make a difference since you're D-log, so already flat - but are there other WB options than the kelvin scale in camera?

Very nice, Wags, thanks for posting your settings with the video.   I like the way Horizon Balancing works for your videos.  Also very nice color correction and conversion from Dlog-M.

A couple of setting questions - what was your field of view setting and aspect ratio setting?  

For editing, did you use the official DJI LUT?  What editing software did you use?

Thank you for the video. Finally a test that makes sense unlike what we have seen so far posted by web stars.

On one thing GoPro is still ahead of DJI and Insta: user manuals. Can't find a table with the FOVs of the different modes. One of the few meaningful video:

 


It is clear that ultra wide and maybe even wide are too wide to avoid distortion behind a flat port. but I think that is impossible even for lenses like AOI or Inon lenses. Not surprisingly, Inon has just introduced an updated lens.

The correction you made shows that these files can be “pushed” quite a bit. Maybe a filter can help. @bghazzal has done several experiments and his solution seems to be very inexpensive as well.

Morning, well it is where I am :classic_smile:

 

@bghazzal Ben, yes the water was rather greenish, WB is either manual or auto.

I like to use manual so its not always changing, easy to adjust in post.

 

@gstrek Gary, when its on Horizon Steady, the camera's only option is Standard Dwarp. 

So that means if the camera is not level, it will level the image itself, great when not looking at the screen when approaching something. I messed around with a few luts, used the official DJI one but ended up using one called "Clouseau 54 Full" then tweaked it. Camera was on 16.9 aspect ratio. The NLE I use is EDIUS Workgroup. Rendered out a 4K Grass Valley HQX 10bit 3.18gig file and straight to YT.

 

@Davide DB Yes watched that vid before, Standard Dwarp is 17mm and no distortion, be interesting to see how it will look through this Glass Port. Agree with all the YT stars, ignore most of them.

 

@ChipBPhoto Cheers, will share more, hopefully in clear water next time. I find filters block light getting in so just keep it clear and CC in post as 10bit holds up well. No colour banding in the water which I hate if you push 8bit too much.

Another little post.

I came across this video of some girl using the port underwater, it grabbed my attention as it looks rather good.

Amazing these little camera put out this quality, its better than my old HDV FX1 - Amphibico Phenom underwater housing that I paid $$$ for back in 2005 :classic_smile:

1.jpgMail Lady arrived, quality is very good. Try it out in the pool tonight. Light is 8000 Lumens and got a blue filter for the light.

Always nice to have new toys to play with :classic_smile:

Rather impressed at the Quality of the glass lens.

 

Messed around with it in the pool day and night, seems Rocksteady - Wide is the best setting.

Rocksteady - Ultra wide gives you vignetting out of the water but none once under until you move the camera around, it can show up here and there in a corner.

 

Out of the water the footage is out of focus, lens made for underwater only.

In the water you can get very close to subjects.

 

Light is very nice - X Adventure M8000

Float arm helps lots to take some of the negative B away.

 

Think we are out on the boat this week so will get it on some Reef.

Hi,  just did a first dive with it, vis was really bad but the lens did its magic. :classic_biggrin:

 

The only problem with letting the camera auto color correct is it changes all the time while you record a shot.

But each to their own.

 

See if I can load this vid from the boat.

 

EDit, manage to get a  file loaded.

Morning, managed a little night dive to test out the gear. Works rather well, the one light nearly covers the full 130 degrees of the port. Such a small compact setup, might get the remote for the light and mount it on the grip. The light will run out of puff if on full power for the full dive. The remote will be easy to drop the power when not shooting subjects.

 

The Glass Port is very nice and makes a huge difference. Hope that helps some if going the OSMO Action 4-5 way.

 

The WB on the camera was set at 5500k, same as I use during the day. Temp of the light is 5600k. Shot in 10 bit D-log M then set it to Rec.709 and added some saturation in post.

Terrific quality for a such small camera.

 

When you have time. Would you mind shooting something on the reef with fixed WB and Natural light?

Hi, back on land now, here is a test side by side clip, seeing how far I can push the 10bit codec.

Action 4 WB set to 5500K

Fill light is set to 5600K, had no blue filter on it.

The water was green and the vis bad but managed to pull it back.

Worse color to shoot underwater is Fluro Pink :classic_biggrin:

For a tiny action can it does okay, cheap and easy to travel with.

Looking forward to getting into the blue water.

Rather happy with the Glass Port or though you have to make sure no particles/bubbles are trapped between camera and port.
