I’m running into some buoyancy issues with my setup and could use some advice.
My gear is a Sony a6300 in a Seafrogs housing with a 6” dome port, and it’s very buoyant. From what I can tell, I’d need around 1kg of extra weight just to make it slightly negative.

I’ve read about using tyre balancing weights, but to reach 1kg I’d basically need to cover the entire housing, which doesn’t seem very practical.

What’s the best way to add this amount of weight to a housing?

Depending on what tray you have (preferably a dual handle one) here's a couple low cost solutions.

1) Simply thread some long cable ties (like 6" regulator mouthpiece ones) through the base plate center and a 1-2 lb. weight underneath the housing when you get to your dive location.

2) If enough room buy one of the trim weight pockets for BCDs or weight belts and put that under your housing tray. That has the advantage of sliding various weights into it and cushions the underside a bit.

Yeah, as David suggests, rig a hard lead dive weight underneath the tray. A little trial and error to determine how much weight you need, but once you’ve done that, it’s a simple, easy solution.

And do not forget you (probably) have strobes or lights and arms...

I have used in the past some tyre balancing weights and I wouldn’t recommend it. After a few dives they began to rust.

You might try doing this is a large tub of water, adding weight to your full kit until it feels easily controllable.

I have made many camera housings. You can use fishing weights, or lead shot. if you have a pool you can place a cup under your housing and add the lead shot to it till it just starts to sink. Weight the the lead shot for a accurate weight you'll need. You can buy the lead shot at gun stores. I always attached my weights to the Tray.
