WWl1/Olympus which lens?

Featured Replies

Hi guys, first post asking one advice… 🍻

I’ve recently buyed a Nauticam wwl1 lens.. . 👍 not b or c versions… the original that if I’m not wrong is optically identical to the B version but with the foam buoyancy collar…

I’ve an old but good oly em1mk2 and I’m trying to figure out which m4/3 lens is better with the wwl1….😅🤷🏻‍♂️

As now I’ve the little Panasonic 12-32 already with Nauticam zoom gear… I need the flat port and the bayonet adapter for it… someone have used this combo(wwl1+12-32)?? Or there is something definitely better?

Thanks a lot..

The issue with the 12-32 is you need to zoom in to 14mm to stop the vignette, a minor inconvenience I guess. I recall that the non-pancake Panasonic 14-42 was tested some time back and found to give the best performance.

Thanks Chris!!! I found online a test with the 12-32 and the guy didn’t had vignettes also at 12mm… but I think he was with the M67 old wwl1… although zooming in a notch isn’t a big issue.. 😅

Thanks again! 😉

If you haven't bought the port yet, I’d recommend looking for a used 14-42mm II. I found mine for 60 euros. There’s also the 14-42mm PZ, which uses a shorter port, but based on tests, the 14-42mm OIS II seems to be the better lens.

P.S.

We are speaking of plastic kit lenses...

Grazie Davide… for the moment I’ve only the wwl1 and the 12-32 with Nauticam zoom gear.. no port and no bayonet mount… as I see my 12-32 use the same port 29 of the 14-42 PZ… the most convenient is to stars with port 29 and 12-32 and if I’m unsatisfied give a try with the PZ…

Thanks again!

Another option is the port 65 and 12-50ez, has to be at 14mm or so but a very good combo.

Port 65?? Umh.. I have already port 45+20mm ring… it would be interesting if I can use my port! Thanks for the idea..

Ps: after thinking at this idea I checked the price of the Nauticam zoom gear for the 12-50.. 😱😱😱😱 it cost like the wwl1….. a little too much 😬😬

I don't know the details because I have never used it, but I believe there are ways to use the 12-50 lens in a 65 port without the expensive gear. Also deepshots in the UK offers a gear for that lens under $100, although I am unsure what it can do. I suspect others here can explain all of this.

I have always heard far more enthusiasm for the Panasonic 14-42 mega (not the collapsing PZ) with the wwl than any of the other lenses for this purpose, but I have not compared them. That lens requires the 35 flat port. That port, with either a 10mm or 30mm extension ring then works with the various 30, 45 and 60mm macro lenses for the M43 system. In other words, with just the 35 port and the 30mm ER, you could shoot with the WWL or the 45 macro or 60 macro, saving a bit of $ on ports and less to pack for travel. Just something to think about.

The lens will fit in the port and autofocus just fine. A zoom gear is necessary, of course. There are a couple of cheaper solutions out there including the Deepshot and at least one other. However note that they don’t provide access to the macro functionality, only the expensive Olympus gear and port will allow that.

There are 3D printing models for a simple zoom gear, which doesn't allow the macro function but otherwise works. I find with that lens using a diopter gets you similar performance to the macro function. It's just a little more work to juggle underwater.

The port 29 is probably the simple option for your existing lenses.
