Susa Posted September 16 Posted September 16 Hi, has anybody heard from SMC-3. It was shown in a picture on Facebook from a Nauticam ambassador. 1
Architeuthis Posted September 16 Posted September 16 Seems to be an overworked version of SMC-1: https://www.uwcamerastore.com/nauticam-super-macro-convertor-3-smc-3-81203 Interested to hear/read what the benefit will be... 1
hedonist222 Posted September 16 Posted September 16 A refreshed SMC-1. Wow. I wonder what they could have improved.
Alex_Mustard Posted September 17 Posted September 17 I've been shooting it since May. Haven't used my SMC-1 since, although the performance is very, very similar. I like it very much, although the other products are more interesting to me. 6
jlaity Posted September 17 Posted September 17 That looks great, thanks for the preview. Are you using the 5T close-up lens with magnifiers like this one, or only one at a time?
Edward Lai Posted September 30 Posted September 30 Thanks to Dr. Mustard for sharing some of the first images of our new SMC-3 ! What I wanted to achieve was to make use of the experience I accumulated over the years to improve one of the best macro lens even further. While maintaining the same magnification, with the use of some extreme glass material (very high refractive index and special dispersion character), I was able to reduce 1/3 of the weight of the original SMC-1, 40% of the thickness, while increased the longest working distance by 8mm. Theoretically, internal reflection has been eliminated. Yet to be confirmed from extensive field tests. Edward 9 3

In fact, on some of my photographs, it's provided a sharper output than the lens itself (with using the diopter). I'm very excited and looking forward. Thanks for this snippet of info, Edward. 1
LGWVPhoto Posted October 15 Posted October 15 Hey everyone, The Nauticam SMC-3 Just went live on Reef Photo's website! https://reefphoto.com/products/nauticam-super-macro-convertor-3-2-3x-magnification 2
Davide DB Posted October 15 Posted October 15 Does it work with an M43 lens? Do SMC1 & 2 work with M43 lens? 😇

Isn't it the same magnification as the Smc-1? I have the Subsee +5 & +10, but rarely use the +10. It's 3.5x magnification is just too tiny for my tastes most of the time. 1

The new one is positioned as an upgraded version of the SMC-1. I am told the focus is more even across the plain, lighter, and a little easier overall to use. Alex M has been using one for several months and likes it. A bit of an impulse buy being sight unseen, but from other insiders it sounds like a nice update. Is it a must-buy if the SMC-1 is already in the kit? Probably not, but I am doing a great deal more macro and will take the upgrades. I’ll let you know in a few weeks once it arrives. 2 1
John E Posted October 16 Posted October 16 I know Nauticam sets the bar high but it would be great to have a comparison of sharpness and contrast (on full frame) of macro wet lenses around this strength and include lenses like AOI UCL-09PRO, Saga +15, Weefine+13/Kraken +13, and Inon UCL-67. 1

I'd just say it does the same job as the SMC-1 (but is also optimised to work with the Sony 90mm as well as the 100/105mm lenses) and incorporates what Nauticam have learned about optics in the 10 years since the SMC-1 was introduced. If you have an SMC-1 and are happy there is no need to upgrade. If your SMC-1 is getting a bit tatty then this is a good reason to replace it. If you shoot Sony and regularly see the cut off with the SMC-1, then this gets rid of it. Alex 4 1

Yes of course, mine was a curiosity because for video a CMC-1 is really difficult to use and I saw this one has a longer working range.

SwiftFF5 Posted October 17 Posted October 17 Hmmmm, my current favorite lens "Olympus M. Zuiko Digital ED 60mm f2.8 Macro" is on the list...
Igor Ledo Lizarraga Posted October 17 Posted October 17 It is great to see compatibility for M43 lenses!!! I had a look but cannot find what the actual working distance of the Oly 60mm + SMC-3 is. Would be great to compare it with the Oly 60mm + CMC-1 but I am assuming the SMC-3 would be more flexible.
jlaity Posted October 17 Posted October 17 I love my SMC-1. I found it sharper with nicer bokeh than the Subsea +5. Almost all my macro photos are taken with the Canon 100mm EF (non-L) and SMC-1 except for black water.

But I'll throw out a challenge to someone willing and able to take the first picture of Shaun the Sheep's testicles. Do I also hear the sound of many photographers singing? 🎵 "All I want for Christmas is an SMC-3?" 🎵 Sorry for using the C- word in October... 3
