Upcoming big sales

Featured Replies

I haven't purchased camera gear for many many years, so a quick question. Are camera bodies, lenses, housings etc etc normally in the Black Friday or Tech Monday sales? Or both? I'm planning a fairly big spend this time for my A7RVI setup.

Isotta

There was a significant discount in the Changi airport Sony shop when I passed through there in August. Not sure if it’s permanent? As I recall the A7R6 was ~$3400USD.

There may be sales around DEMA?

Not sure about Black Friday.

Tbh, i dont remember any housing ect sales for black friday.

Some camera/lens deals will surely come around, but i wouldnt have high hopes for the A7RVI to be featured in them, as the "deals" mostly seem to be for older stock.

Maybe one option is to shop around Asia? Depending on exchange rate and friends/family/colleagues travelling of course.

I have picked up gear in Taiwan, difference ended up paying for flights and a weekend (drinks excluded🤣).

Will keep an eye out for all of those - cheers!

OK interesting - I do have to go to Taiwan in a few months on a trip taking in Singapore / Hong Kong / Shenzhen / Taiwan.

I picked up housing and camera in HK, no taxes. You'd get the same if you pick it up in Cayman Islands, or EU and then get VAT reimbursed. In HK/Taiwan, you can get a grey market A7RVI for even cheaper, comes without warranty (bulk buy), straight new.

If purchased, I would assume its not a USA version

If you buy internationally: The warranty is generally valid only in the country of purchase. For example, a camera bought in Japan or Europe will not automatically be covered in the U.S. unless it is part of Sony’s “international warranty” program

Something to confirm for sure. It was at the Sony store, so?

HK & Taiwan are definitely doable, I taught underwater photo in Cayman 30 years ago and have absolutely no desire to go back there whatsoever!

Be careful with Sony purchases in Japan. Only certain non-Japanese models (“international models”) are sold in Japan, and domestic models have Japanese menus only.

I wanted to buy what they call an “international model” of the A7S III in Japan, but it wasn't on the list of international models authorised for sale here.

I can read Japanese, so Japanese menus aren't an issue, and got a Japanese model because it was cheaper and under local warranty, but I would have preferred English menus for a wider resale market.

Good to know! I'm fine with a few languages, but Japanese isn't one of them!

Nice! The store at Changi airport or another one in Asia?

No, the one near Causeway bay in HK!

For grey market prices, you'd want to see on price.com.hk but the retailers that offer the cameras will make their margin on lenses/SD cards that you'd need to buy it with, otherwise they won't accept the sale (too much hassle for too little margin)

okay... 2 cents worth..

not sure about everyone...but i want to touch, feel, look at the lens /camera before i buy them... new or used.

price.com.hk - i looked at the prices and some even though they say they have stock... that is not 100% certain. i went to the shop in HK that say they have stock, but they said to me... its next week before it will come. maybe i looking for a lens that was quite new. i guess, its best you can message them and confirm that they have it before going down.. the price is imo, the best in AISA that is not JAPAN ... as their tax is low.

for diving housing in HK, i also went to look, but same as many shop... you looking for certain small items, like float arms, FO cable, etc.. they will have... full housing, i think not many shop will keep so many around... check and maybe need some deposit before they will bring in.. i also would like to know where to link up for HK as the shop i used to go to has closed down!

Changi Airport SIngapore.... .ishopchangi.com

you can buy from the singapore changi airport if you happen to go by, it is like 9% less then what you get in Singapore itself. as changi sells it less GST ( good and service tax) which is 9%. interestingly, you can buy and get it send to your address in singapore ( not sure about hotel) and you get a 9% discount!! imo, some camera shop in singapore, you can get lens / camera cheap than what the official sony/canon/nikon shop sell for.

It would be interesting to find out what the prices are like in Shenzhen as well - I might try to find out from a mate in China.

Same or more expensive (I went), HK seems to be the cheapest ! In PRC You’d also want to refund VAT which is an extra hassle at the airport (or train station in Shenzhen) on departure.

Have him to walk up to the Nauticam factory and ask for some gear "that fell off the delivery truck"

I think that Nauticam's head office is in Shenzhen, but I once got the feeling that the factory was somewhere else in China (which is not uncommon).

Cameras are cheaper in Hong Kong, while Nauticam products are cheaper in Shenzhen.
