Not sure how 7Artisans came up with 10mm for full frame fisheye but they already have one that is MF and 185 degrees with minimum focus of 15cm.

10mm is oddball for FF, like kind of a circle?

Seems like a lens with very limited usefulness for us.

10mm would normally seem like an APS-C fisheye 1.5X=15mm 1.6X=16mm fisheye. If you look for reviews of the 7artisans 10mm FF fisheye it is 185 degrees and covers the full frame, it also gets very good reviews.

Sounds like an ASP-C that is mislabeled as FF to me

That is what I am, thinking, otherwise the FLs make no sense.

The projection is stereographic, 185 diagonal, 15cm, f2.8-16, 602g. This new lens is 15cm f2.5-16 so the design seems to have been slightly updated, but I expect it to be a full-frame lens.

The headline on Sony Rumors is that the 7Artisans will release a new AF fisheye in Sony FE, Nikon Z and L-mount on Tuesday. this is a 10mm, 185 degree FF fisheye. The Manual focus version, under $300.00US has had positive reviews for if's build and image quality. This is an F/2.5 to F/16 lens with an under six inch (15cm) minimum focus distance. I believe the MAX is a new line of higher quality lenses with additional features.

Would the (E mount) still be around 160 plus degrees on a crop sensor Sony? If so that is a useful increase in FOV over my very much loved WWL. And a better lens than the 16mm pancake with the FE adapter attached.

I bought the manual version of this lens for E mount recently for under AUD 400.

It arrived with very faint distance and aperture markings on the lens, and without the advertised glow in the dark ability.

I would have returned it except optically it seems quite good.

However after experimenting with it underwater, I'm not convinced manual is worth the trouble (for underwater), partly because the zoom gear I cobbled up was a Nauticam N120 size, which meant the lens has to be removed first, to remove the camera from the housing. You also have to recalibrate the focus scale, which requires a bit of careful maths, and the result is hard to read underwater.

So an AF version is welcome... except for one potential problem:

The manual version is 185 degrees diagonal. I could not exactly align the lens' EP with the optical centre for the Nauticam 140 dome, without vignetting caused by the dome itself, and that's with the shade removed.

So I couldn't improve on an approx 30mm diameter circle centre sharpness at f11, and that's with a small amount of the vignetting. A longer extension to remove the vignetting reduced the sharp centre circle to just under 24mm, which is not great.

So be prepared to crop if the AF version is also 185 degrees...

It appears this is a stereographic projection fisheye so it is part way between a typical equisolid projection fisheye and a rectilinear lens. This explains why it is a 10mm focal length. See this plot from Bob Atkins:

I plugged the numbers into the formula for a stereographic fisheye and 10mm comes out as 188.8° diagonal field.

This table shows the focal length needed to achieve an 180° and 185° in each projection.

If the 10mm focal length is correct, I think that means the projection is between lines A & B on the plot, lenses won't necessarily exactly match the formula for the projections. Note that the same focal length gives different fields of view as the projections change. What does this mean for the images produced?

Basically you lose some of the fisheye "pop" that comes from the subject appearing larger in the centre of the frame compared to the edges - basically less barrel distortion. It also means that the addition of a 1.4x has less zooming effect as the subject is relatively smaller in the centre where the 1.4x crops to.

The Canon 8-15 on the other hand is about half way between the Equidistant and equisolid projections and has a field of 175° at 15mm focal length. and has fairly strong fisheye pop.

The WACP on the other hand appears to be also close to stereographic projection based upon that formula getting closest to the reported field of view at full zoom when tuned to calculate the 130° diagonal field at minimum zoom.

Sorry, I meant a shorter ext of course, to position the lens further into the dome...

Compromise reached was 45mm total inc adapter (no shade). At 35mm, shade vignetted, but not the dome. At 55mm, dome vignetted badly (no shade) - not water tested.

It is possible that in addition to fixed aperture, you might get away with fixed focus (at f11), provided you aren't trying to do CFWA...

I also tested this lens with the 8.5" dome, but vignetting is worse, as expected, since the OC is approx 25mm behind the port flange.

I won't be buying the AF version until / unless others can show it works well without vignetting, on FF. The Laowa 8-15 AF is still on the cards, so hopefully it won't be quite as wide FOV as this 7 Artisans.

Why don’t someone just make a classic 15 mm fisheye lens for the new mirrorless bodies. Optimally a 15-30 fisheye zoom, but that would be too much asked for. I’ll take a 15 prime thank you.

The Tokina 10-17 reborn!

15-30 AF fisheye would be a dream lens underwater. It's a wonder one of the housing manufacturers hasn't had one one made in an easily adaptable format.

Pentax did have a 15-28mm full frame fisheye before the appearance of the Tokina 10-17.

The close focus of the Pentax lens is 450mm, meaning that it won't perform well and may not even focus UW with a small dome. The adapter with that big bump may also be an issue depedning on how much room is available inside the housing.

Sure hope this 7artisans actual release would make Laowa to release theirs soon.

Wishlist is of course that its almost exactly like old Tokina 🤣

As someone currently considering the 8-15 Canon this is definitely very on my mind.

However I did just pickup a Zen dp100 for Tokina at a good price and I'll grab a Tokina in the meantime.

Given how poor our vis usually is I doubt I will be limited in IQ and from what I've read the Tokina offers some interesting crop opportunities on FF.
