Made my first set of cables today. Originally cut the fiber with sissors and couldn't get the strobe to trigger. Used a razor blade to cut the fiber and now it's firing every time. Pretty pumped! Base

Thanks Tim for organizing!

And i want to add something to the topic: "Make your own":
I broke already a few meters (even of the 613 core) due my strobe arms and clamps being pretty tight when i move them around and sometimes the relatively thin cable (with its 2-2.2 mm outside diameter) gets in between the arm and the clamp and gets kind of crashed. First i tried to fix the routing of the cable with velcro straps to the arm but that didn't really work.
Last thing i'm testing at present is: cover the cable with something so that the outer diameter is larger and the chance to get in between the small gap of the arm and the clamp is kind of impossible.
What did i use: i had plenty of paracord left from my Lanyard DIY projects. So i removed the inner part and used the outer part as sleeve for the cable. It is a bit loose but works by now. I know, not everybody may have this issue but maybe it's an useful idea for someone.
Just cut the Paracord about the same length as the strobe cable is, heat the ends and install the connectors. A drop of superglue will fix the paracord on the connector (and can also be removed without destroying the connector).

What a super idea! I've not had the problem of the cables getting trapped (yet?) but this is a clever way around it. Thanks, Michael.

My solution since 6 month is to build some arms with a small tube in it the fiber in the arm  come out on the other side.... and go in the next arm and go out  before going on the strobe.

I love this setup

Just finished 18 days and almost 100 hours of use with my DIY strobes cables and didn't have one issue. Abused them on the rocks in the shallows and in the pack while bushwacking into remote locations. They performed flawlessley. Thank you so much to everyone who has contributed to this thread!! I never would have made my own cables without these posts.

Sorry to dredge up an old thread, but I found this quite interesting. I went on the hunt tonight for some 613 core cable in Canada, but alas the only distributor I was able to find that deals with Asahi kasei does not import their mcq-1000. Any chance any other Canucks on here have happened to find a supplier? Shipping to Canada for 5m was $55, which would be a hard pill to swallow.

Getting hold of this cable seems a regular problem. Seems impossible to find in Europe too. If you know someone in the US who could get it shipped to them from the US supplier then mail it to you in Canada..... could that work?

I was thinking about ordering a new batch of cable to Seattle. I could order a bunch and ship some off to wherever. I will be heading to canada in two weeks and could drop some in the mail. Probably 6 meters minimum.

I was considering about $200 worth which is around 25-30 meters.

Also, i just updated my connector design and they are better than ever. Happy to share some of these too.

I'd be in for a set of cables if you can make one end fit Nauticam DSLR?

I think I would set the minimum quantity to 4 or 6 meters. Two or three pairs of 1 meter cables.

I just checked and my cost for 30 meters + shipping is about $9 USA per meter. That is 613 muti-fiber, 2.2mm. The good stuff. I will include the connectors for free. Add $10 for USA shipping. Shipping inside Canada I think is similar. I anyone wants international shipping and is wiling to pay any tariff costs, we can discuss shipping costs.

So that is:

36+10 = $46 for 2 pairs of 1 meter cables

54+10 = $64 for 3 pairs of 1 meter cables

If I can get at least 2 people to commit, I will go ahead and place an order today.

I will use the rest. I wear them out after a few years, and I give away optical cables to my dive buddies as needed. So, I go through whatever I have available in several years. I think I'm down to my last 5 or 6 meters right now.

Typo

I'm happy to commit to 6m of cable if you can ship to Australia.

That's a deal. I'll measure the length I need, if I can cut it with nothing special I'd probably order twice the length I need to have spare.

S&S plug on one end and Nauticam on the other.

I will order!

Share a picture of the connectors you want, the terminology is sort of fluid.

This is an Inon/S&S 7mm connector which is the lowest common denominator.

Shipping to Australia would probably be about $30 USD.

Hi Dave,

interested in the new designed connectors. It would be great if you shared the print files.

Br Markus

They thread on like a cap. I can thread a 1/4 compression fitting on there. But I'm guessing something in TPU could thread on without actually having to print threads.

I have been meaning to make one of those. Someone asked me for some of those... I will see if i can knock that out.

Hi Dave,

thanx for sharing. Will download and print in the next few days. Rating will follow. But I`m shure your design will work. Already printed your design of macro rings for retra flash and used it on my current philippines dive trip. They fit and worked perfect. Backscatter was noticeably reduced. Just returned back home after 6 weeks and need some time for detailed review.
