Who has tried a Seafrogs aluminum housing?

Featured Replies

Just wondering if anyone has actually taken the plunge (no pun intended) and actually bought one of the Seafrogs all aluminum housings yet? They are marketing them quite hard online, but there is very little about them on social media or even youtube. I cannot help but think it is all paid advertisement for them, but no real life reviews of one of these cases. I cant help but think they may not be the best option for a primary setup, but might be something to upgrade my secondary setup into (tat will probably see water once a year or so). Even with that I would be hesitant without hearing some real life experience with one, I just don't feel like being the Guinea pig! Cheers

Hi @Underwater with Art

Thanks for posting!

I thought there was a similar post by someone else on this same topic a while ago.

I know of other underwater photographers who use SeaFrogs housings who have never had a problem. I used one for a while with my Olympus TG6.

It all depends what you are looking to use it for, is it for snorkelling, diving, which model camera do you have?

Always happy to help if I can.

Have a great afternoon!

Thanks Maria. I am actually looking at the new all aluminum housing now and have not found much online here about them, only the Polycarbonate version. I did watch a YouTube video review and unboxing and that version did not look too bad.

The plan would be to use it for diving mostly. Depths to recreational and possibly beyond depending on the subject.

If you happen to have any experience with one or can point me towards someone who does, it would be much appreciated.

Cheers

If the aluminum housing has the same buttons and controls as the polycarbonate they would be a pass.

Their new monitor is appealing though.

Do you mind elaborating. I’m not familiar with what’s been learned about their buttons and controls.

The polycarbonate housings have very poorly made controls. Flexible plastic that don't functional well.

So many people from here visited Dema and didnt go on their stand?

I was hoping for someone to make a review from hands on there.

I made myself this question a few months ago, I crossed emails with the factory, received a quotation, seek unboxings and test in youtube...in fact I found a guy in youtube with a video of one year using the housing and he was really happy with it.

I did not finally buy the housing. i wanted to upgrade my camera to a Canon R6 mk ii. and Aquatica doesn't make that housing, I have a lot of Aquatica stuff and Then Chris Ross showed me that buying an Isotta housing with a conversion ring was probably the best option for me. Isotta is italian so I can service it and resolve any issue within days. I can keep using my domes, ports and extension rings. Alongside the Seafrogs port chart is very short and doesn't show one of the most common underwater lenses, and almost the one I use the more, the Canon 8-15 fisheye. So I had to buy brand new domes, ports and extension rings not knowing if they were the right ones. So the final expense was going to be almost the same.

I finally bought the Isotta housing and I'm so happy with the decision, it arrived on time for my next trip, and anything I need from Isotta I get it in a short time.

That said, to me Seafrogs looks like a Nauticam housing in all senses. And they remind me the Nauticam company politics when they started. They started with polycarbonate prices for aluminium premium quality housings, once they got a lot of market they started to increase the prices until nowadays where they are even more expensive than the "traditional" brands.

I know 2 people that use Seafrogs polycarbonate housings for Sony 67xx series, and seem quite satisfied with it (although one has upgraded to Marelux recently). I have a Seafrogs housing for a G7X III which I use as a rental unit for divers looking to try underwater camera setups, and its worked well enough over the past 7-8 months (which isn't a lot, I admit)

The aluminum build quality seems good and, basically, they seem to be "strongly inspired" by Nauticam’s design choices. However, the devil is in the details, so we don’t know anything yet about the design and durability of the buttons and levers. I also still find it difficult to navigate their port chart; the info seems scattered across several web pages. I would suggest hiring a good web designer to start with! 😁

Actually, we need alternatives that help lower prices and basically make this hobby accessible to as many people as possible. It feels like we are heading in the opposite direction instead.

Then there's the lock-in factor. Switching systems usually forces you to rebuy all your gear, which is a huge financial hit.

If you look at Pavel's post on his TTL converters on Sea frogs, he shows one mounted on a Sea frogs housing. The housing looked rather stained by watermarks and given they have only been out for a short while this must have occurred rapidly. Brings into question the quality of the surface treatment.

Yes, I saw it. Very strange. I asked Pavel to give us some feedback. I hope he replies
