Confirmed: Sony Fisheye Zoom 8-14mm

I am posting it here because at the moment it is only a rumor.

A piece of news however that if confirmed would make many underwater photographers happy.

The source on X is considered very very reliable. There are no dates. We will see.

Some Sony Lenses Currently Under Testing:

** These are all engineering prototypes. Specifications or naming conventions may be adjusted upon official release.

It can of course be some GM glass and cost a fortune. Maybe Sony wants one because everyone else has their own 8-15.

The Laowa one is probably more further down with development, as it was already shown hands on in the spring at Beijing.

Laowa also has been pretty good with pricing. Just hoping this will release this autumn as Weibo/WeChat rumors suggest.

First leaked images of the new 8-14mm f/3.5 FE lens

And here we have the first leaked image of the new 8-14mm f/3.5 Fisheye G zoom lens! Let me know in the comment system if you spot something interesting on the image...I certainly have ;) Preorders op

What I see appears to be the first auto focus fisheye zoom lens actually designed for a mirrorless sensor. The Canon RF 7-14mm F/2.8-3.5 L is I am sure a great lens but it is 109.4mm long which is reminiscent of a DSLR lens with a lens adapter attached. My guess is the New Sony lens will come in closer to 83/86mm with minimum focus distance around 14/15cm.

I doubt that a Sony 1.4 or 2X TC will work with this lens, more likely an after market TC like those for the DSLR lenses will be needed, hoping to be wrong on this issue. The lens hood and port shade will need to be removed to work at the 8mm end. On the 14mm end the lens would go to a full 180 degrees rather than the 175 degrees with 15mm.

I also think it will come in under $1900.00 to be competitive with the Canon.

Have to wait for the specs to see what the field is as it depends on the projection they have chosen for the design. To get a 180° field the focal length can be anywhere between 11 and 21.5mm. Or put another way 14mm could give anything between 150 and 200° depending on the projection. Most likely though it will hover somewhere around 180°. The 7 Artisans 10mm fisheye gave a full frame 185° field as it was quite a different projection, closer to a rectilinear.

It appears we will have the answers to all or most of our questions on Tuesday Sept 8th when Sonyalpharumers.com say the lens and the 400mm and 600mm F/4.5 lenses will be announced by Sony.

They say price around $1499.00.

I'm a Sony Digital Imaging Advocate, working with Sony New Zealand. I've been lucky enough to have access to a pre-release FE 8-14 mm F3.5 Fisheye G, so I hope it'll be helpful to share some initial information on the lens here.


A fisheye is my favourite lens underwater. For me, that's meant shooting with the Canon 8-15mm fisheye on a Metabones V since 2018. I've been using that with Nauticam's recommended port configuration: the 35.5 mm N100-N120 adapter, 30 mm extension ring, and the 140 dome port (18810/18811) with removable shade.

I was asked to try to get some underwater photos with this new lens. It's still wintry here in the South Island of New Zealand – 10ºC in the water – and the weather has been generally rubbish, so (a) the dive shop is closed, and (b) no sane tourists want to snorkel. That's limited my opportunity to actually use the lens to two – one, fortunately, rather good – snorkelling sessions with dusky dolphins. These dolphins are (extremely friendly) speedsters, and I'm not fully dialled in on settings / AF struggles with them, so hopefully the shots look nice – but don't read much into them in terms of actual lens capability.

All dolphin shots are at f/10 and 1/500 or 1/640 sec (auto ISO)

Anyway, some relevant information and stats on the new lens:

  • Price in Australian dollars: AU$2,099 (I wasn't provided with other prices, but they should be out now or available shortly).

  • Autofocus: capable of 120 fps tracking. Two linear focus motors.

  • Min. focusing distance is 15 cm, for a 0.22x magnification ratio.

  • Aperture is f/3.5 – f/22.

  • Relies on in-camera stabilisation.

  • Lightweight (314 g).

  • It has a manual zoom ring. Zoom is internal. There's a 3-position zoom lock on the lens for full-frame circular fisheye (8 mm), full-frame diagonal fisheye (14 mm), and an intermediate lock position for APS-C diagonal fisheye.

  • It has a rear filter holder (same size as the 12-24 mm GM and 14 mm GM lenses).

  • It has an excellent new lens hood design that minimises the in-bag diameter of the lens, which I'm a big fan of.

  • Sony teleconverters don't work with this lens.

The Sony 8-14 mm is 82.8 mm long, compared to the Canon 8-15 mm (without Metabones V) at 83 mm. My understanding is that the Metabones V adds about 26 mm to the Canon's length. To use the Sony underwater, I simply removed the 30 mm extension ring and... thought positive thoughts. Hopefully some of you can do proper pool test shots soon, and I'm confident (= extremely hopeful) that Nauticam will produce a proper N100-optimised dome port for this lens.


In the interim, I can at least say that the N100-N120 adapter -> 140 mm does work for large animals in the blue (i.e. not thinking about corner sharpness, which I haven't looked at). The Sony's diameter is 63.1 mm, compared to the Canon's 78.5 mm. I don't know enough about optics to surmise how that affects things.


I took a fascinating comparison shot of the side of our garage with the Canon 8-15 mm (at 15 mm) and the Sony (at 14 mm) to show the field of view for each.

So as expected no TC compatibility with this lens. So for full frame pictures we have to zoom in to 14mm.
Is this really something to worry about and keep the Canon 8-15mm? Maybe just use the Tamron 17-28mm as alternative to the Canon 8-15mm with 1.4tc?

I was asked to try to get some underwater photos with this new lens. It's still wintry here in the South Island of New Zealand – 10ºC in the water – and the weather has been generally rubbish, so (a) the dive shop is closed, and (b) no sane tourists want to snorkel. That's limited my opportunity to actually use the lens to two – one, fortunately, rather good – snorkelling sessions with dusky dolphins. These dolphins are (extremely friendly) speedsters, and I'm not fully dialled in on settings / AF struggles with them, so hopefully the shots look nice – but don't read much into them in terms of actual lens capability.

All dolphin shots are at f/10 and 1/500 or 1/640 sec (auto ISO)

So if I understand correctly, this lens will be huge for users of cropped systems, who will be able to take advantage of the zoom without using a teleconverter.

Great news for Sony APS-C users and for M43 users 🏆

I read that it does not work with the Sony TC.

Is there a chance that it could work with Kenko ones or is there a physical reason with the rear lens element?

Would it actually fit on M43?

It may work with the Megadap 21 on Nikon full frame as a fixed 14mm FE and/or zoom on Nikon DX. Not sure it would be preferable over the Nikon 8-15 with FTZ, though. In any case, nice to see additional lenses of potential underwater interest.

Just to confirm, you are saying your test rig is:

No vignetting with Nauticam 140 dome plus shade, and 35.5mm N100-N120 adapter, no extension ring?

The size is nice, I'm sure the AF will be very good as a native lens, lack of a compatible TC is less nice.

Would need to be significantly sharper than the upcoming Laowa AF 8-15 to draw me to what will be basically a 14mm prime in my use.

Many thanks Simon. I downloaded a couple of the dolphin shots. Nice, but a bit soft in the corners. I'm guessing adding a short extension (10mm?) would help, but might introduce vignetting with the shade on (at 14mm). My guess based on what appears to be the Metabones V length of c. 26mm.

Or maybe extra 5mm is enough, in which case you could go 25mm adapter + 15mm ext...

If you feel like trying either of these, that would be great...

I've only got the 30 mm extension, unfortunately – hopefully someone will be able to start some proper pool testing in the near future!
