Apologies if this has already been discussed elsewhere, but does anyone have any experience shooting with the new Sony Fish Eye? Thoughts?

Most likely person would be Alex Mustard - maybe check his youtube site

I don't have one.

I didn't have any fisheye suitable diving remaining this year (Lembeh + Galapagos), so I didn't rush to get the lens.

Lots of people have tried it - as Sony has had a good stock available. I am not sure anyone has actually tested it against the other options people are using (Canon 8-15mm specifically - which I don't actually have either!).

I plan to get one in January before my Raja Ampat trip - where I would expect to shoot lots of split levels - unless someone discovered something bad about it before then!

What Nauticam wet lens ports would you think will work with this lens, as I don't think Nauticam has gotten around to post yet?

I think that Nauticam have released a port for the new Sony Zoom Fisheye, but it doesn't seem to have made it on to their website yet.

This is what you are looking for - they've just started shipping -

Thanks - looks to retail at $1,600USD

I'd be interested (as well as others) in seeing it set up on your rig, some pics it takes & your thoughts when you get it wet - thanks

Not mine unfortunately😀 Belongs to a friend of mine who lives in China who received his today - I will get some pics from him as soon as possible.

I'll be curious to see what the built in extension is and whether the Sony 8-15 can work with the existing N120 adapter

Nauticam is pretty bad at updating website/port charts. And also real bad on social media informing on new releases.

As it can be sen now, basically only rumors about a new fisheye port and suddenly they are shipping in China. Similar happened with the 100mm macro port.

But i think the existing N100-N120 adapter will work just fine. I tried my RS13 which is in a 50mm F1.8 body, with just adapter and 230mm dome, and the adapter is like 1cm too much, shade is visible slightly in the orners.

8-14 is about 2cm longer than the abovementioned lens, maybe i need to go and just buy the lens to test (but i kinda want to hold out for the Laowa still).

Also mods might wanna combine this with the other bigger thread on the lens?

I am waiting on the Laowa as well. I'm unlikely to get the Sony so the debate is between the Laowa and adapted Canon

I don’t know about the Laowa and a TC, but I reluctantly tried the Sony 2x with my Canon 8-15. I have to say I am surprised at how much I like it. The TC provides a bit of zoom when needed. It is quite nice in the water behind a 140 dome.

Keep in mind I also had the Canon and adapter prior to adding the TC. Starting from scratch, the Laowa will be significantly less expensive.

I have the adapter, extensions and TC. So my decision is not entirely straightforward.

If the Laowa can take the TC then things get very interesting.

There are a number of issues. First the SONY TC won't mount to the Sony fisheye, second issue is that the Kenko don't make a TC for Sony E mount. The Laowa lens in E mount has the same issues. I can't see it taking a SONY converter due to the extended nose making it impossible to mount.

The Canon 8-15 has the advantage of being designed for a camera with 44mm flange distance - this gives plenty of room to install an AF converter. With the 8-15 you can get a Kenko 1.4x or 2x and mount to the Metabones though the performance of the 2x is reported to be not great. The interesting part for SONY users is that the Sony e mount 2x works very well with the 8-15 in conjunction with the metabones adapter and it really only does this because of the fact it has a long back focus as it is designed for a DSLR.

The downside is the Canon 8-15 is no longer made so you need to buy it second hand. I think with the Canon 8-15 the message is enjoy it while it lasts, in the current state of play with all mirror-less cameras in the future adapting lenses will become a thing of the past and we will eventually lose the ability to have a fisheye zoom option unless Tokina or someone comes up with a new 10-17 or similar. The short flange distance of the mirrorless lenses will make it difficult to adapt any of them or use them with coverters unless Kenko extends their range of converters.

I've just ordered the Sony fisheye and the new N100 140mm dome port. (Shooting on both a7CR and a7R6)

I'm still fairy new to things - so apologies if this is a silly question/old discussion.

Considering there isn't a current TC option:

  • Would shooting in crop mode allow you to use the entire zoom range of 8-14mm without vignetting?

  • If this is the case - would shooting in crop mode be a bad idea on a high res camera? (if only as an option when you wanted the zoom).

So would APSC mode give a reasonable bit of flexibility whilst diving with the new Sony 8-14? Or is this a bad idea

You would get a 180 diagonal frame same as at 14mm at about 9.5mm zoom on APS-C and the zoom equivalent would be a bit closer at 14mm compared to using a 1.4x TC. Whether it's a bad idea or not - hard to say, it's not a bad idea but maybe is of limited benefit. It can help with framing the subject but you might just as well crop in post. If the ability to zoom helps you compose better then perhaps yes it will work well for you.

I have found this on internet https://blog.fotografit.eu/sony-fe-8-14mm-f3-5-fisheye-g-underwater-nauticam-n100-vs-n120-port-options/

It seems that there are two options to use the new Sony 8-14mm underwater with Nauticam housings

1) the new 140mm Nauticam Dome N100 (1600 Dollars)

2) the old 140mm Nauticam Dome N120 + the extension ring 35,5mm N120-N100

If someone already have the old 140mm Nauticam dome N120 and the extension ring 35,5mm N120-N100 (used for WCPC) you can save a lot of money..... but obviously you cannot use the Sony teleconverter....

I have a zen dp-100 for my sony a6700. Would that work with the new sony fisheye lens? I really like the dome because of the small size.

And maybe a dumb question maybe, why do people want a teleconverter to us with it? For closeup whalesharks for exemble, isn't the wide angle fisheye lens a benefit? Or is it already to wide?

Hi Michiel

There are no dumb questions. Sometimes the answers can be…..

A TC works well with an FE lens to give a photographer the Close Focus Wide-Angle option, CFWA. This allows you to get very close to the critter and produces a larger image of the subject than just FE - but provides a wide-angle to show the subject in its environment.

It’s a neat technique and can be very effective. A small dome port is ideal

as the size doesn’t get in the way as much as a larger dome port allowing strobes to be tucked in very tightly which is key to CFWA lighting.

Not an especially good example below which gives the idea - shot with the classic Tokina 10-17mm DX lens (on an APS-C sensor D500) with a Kenko 1.4TC. If I'd just used the Tokina, the moray would have appeared very small.

I have Canon 8-15mm, old Nauticam N120 140mm domeport and the 35,5mm N120/N100 adapter. No problem to use with pure fisheye lens (30mm N120 extension) and also with 2x Sony TC (60mm N120 extension)...

=> I guess the new Sony fisheye with N100 140mm domeport is a lot more smaller/lighter...

(I guess also Canon 8-15mm +/- TC will be lighter/smaller with the N100 domeport, but not sure whether the assembly fits into it)

I also have WACP-C/Sony 28-60mm, but the N100 version of WACP-C. Just needs a 30mm N100 extension, no N120/N100 adapter required.

It really does seem the only real option is the Canon for maximum flexibility unless there is a miracle with the Laowa. Maybe it'll be so sharp that simply cropping is going to be effective on modern high resolution bodies. Being able to compose on a circular projection then crop a vertical or square would be decent for social media anyway.

Here is a fun one: the Tokina 10-17 with the 2.0TC covers the entire FF sensor across it's zoom range. I'm currently playing with it behind a Zen100 plus 35.5 adapter and 30mm extension. EQ will not be great I'm sure and it's definitely slow to focus but you do get a 20-34 fisheye. I'm betting one of the 1.4 TCs might also get FF coverage since the bare lens will do it from 15mm.

I would think no problem to fit into an N100 port, the OD of the Canon 8-15 is listed as 78.5 while the ID of my N85-N120 adapter is 77mm, so It is only just short of fitting through my N85 system.

The Canon lens is 225gr more than the Sony, but for situation it's moot as you can't use the 2x TC with the Sony lens. This won't change until/if someone produces a quality 2x TC without a protruding nose. There is probably some weight saving with a pure N100 setup - you could replace the N100-N120 with a 35mm extension but I expect the N100 dome is very similar weight.

I'm just playing modifying the zoom gear I had printed to use the main housing zoom control on my OM-1 housing and it occurs to me that an N100 housing for the OM-1 would solve a lot of issues and would also allow Nauticam to streamline their range of ports. The N85 port is just a little too small for many of the interesting m43 lenses.

What one can say is, that cropping from a FF sensor will give identical results as using the lens on cameras with smaller sensors that have the pixel counts below:

#1.: Using a 8-14(15)mm fisheye lens on FF and cropping 1.4x to APS-C gives 26 Mpixel (in case of Sony A7R5) and 28 Mpixel (for A7R6), etc...

#2.: When cropping 2x the pixel count becomes simply a quarter, i.e. 15,3 Mpixel for A7R5 and 16,7 Mpixel for A7R6.

=> I believe it is a save bet that using the zoom FE lens on an APS-C camera gives the same IQ compared to an image from high resolution FF, that has been cropped to APS-C size (A6700, for comparison, has 26 Mpixel).

=> I am not sure about cropping down to MFT sensor size. 15-16 Mpixels are, however, still not so bad...

The question is, how much IQ can be restored by the use of TCs (in case TCs are available) in comparison to cropping, when 1.4x or 2x TCs are considered...

I would be very interested to see such a determination and comparison of imaging quality under standardized studio conditions (crop vs. TC), in case somebody would bother to do the tests...🙂
